Tips:

  • Use a variety of potatoes: Combining different types of potatoes, such as Yukon Golds, russets, and reds, creates a more flavorful and textured dish.
  • Shred the potatoes evenly: Consistent-sized shreds ensure even cooking and prevent some pieces from becoming over- or undercooked.
  • Season the potatoes well: Don't be shy with the salt and pepper. You can also add other seasonings, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika, to taste.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When cooking the potatoes, make sure to spread them out in a single layer so that they cook evenly.
  • Cook the potatoes until they're crispy: The key to perfect hash browns is crispy potatoes. Cook them over medium-high heat until they're golden brown and slightly charred.
  • Don't skimp on the cheese: A generous amount of cheese is essential for a loaded hash brown casserole. Use a good-quality cheddar cheese for the best flavor.
  • Add your favorite toppings: Once the casserole is baked, you can add any toppings you like. Some popular options include sour cream, salsa, guacamole, and bacon.
