SAUSAGE AND LENTIL STEW
Steps:
- Rinse the lentils and cull them for small stones and debris. Put them in a heavy 4-quart pot with a tight-fitting lid. Cut thick sausages into 1-inch lengths or thin ones into 2-inch lengths, and put them in the pot. Clean and thinly slice the celery, chop the leaves, peel and finely chop the onion, and add it all to the pot.
- Pour in the water, and add the salt and a few grindings of black pepper. Stir all the ingredients together, cover, and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
- Reduce the heat and cook at a lively simmer for about 1 hour, stirring from time to time to prevent the lentils from burning. When the sausages and lentils are cooked and the liquid has thickened, serve piping hot in bowls.
Tips:
- To save time, use pre-cooked lentils or canned lentils. Simply rinse them well before adding them to the stew.
- If you don't have bratwurst, you can substitute another type of sausage, such as kielbasa or chorizo.
- To make the stew more hearty, add some diced potatoes or carrots.
- For a thicker stew, add a cornstarch slurry (equal parts cornstarch and water) to the stew and bring to a simmer.
- Serve the stew with a side of crusty bread or rice.
Conclusion:
Lentil and bratwurst stew is a hearty and flavorful dish that is perfect for a cold night. It is also a great way to use up leftover lentils and bratwurst. The stew can be made in advance and reheated, making it a convenient meal option. So next time you are looking for a delicious and easy stew, give this lentil and bratwurst stew a try.
