Jerk Turkey Burgers on Sweet Potato Rounds image

Thick-cut sweet potatoes work nicely as stand-ins for hamburger buns in these island-inspired turkey burgers. The yogurt helps keep the ground turkey moist and delicious.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 1h10m

Yield 4 burgers

Number Of Ingredients 13

12 ounces ground turkey
2 tablespoons 2-percent Greek yogurt
1 scallion, sliced
1 small garlic clove, finely grated
1/2 teaspoon jerk seasoning
Kosher salt
2 cups coleslaw mix
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1 tablespoon white vinegar
2 large, fat sweet potatoes (about 1 1/2 pounds), peeled and cut into eight 1/2-inch rounds
1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more for oiling the grill grates
Nonstick cooking spray
2 tablespoons mango chutney

Steps:

  • Prepare a grill for medium-high heat.
  • Use your hands to gently combine the turkey, yogurt, scallion, garlic, jerk seasoning and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a medium bowl. Form into four 3-inch patties about 1/2-inch thick. Chill for at least 30 minutes (this helps to keep the burgers from sticking to the grill).
  • Combine the coleslaw mix, mayonnaise and vinegar in a small bowl. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Brush the sweet potatoes with the oil and sprinkle with a large pinch of salt. Lightly oil the grill grates. Arrange the sweet potato rounds on the grill, cover with the lid and cook until there are nice grill marks and the potatoes are tender but not mushy, 8 to 12 minutes per side. Remove and set aside to cool completely.
  • Spray both sides of the turkey burgers with nonstick cooking spray and grill, covered, until the burgers have nice grill marks and an internal temperature of 165 degrees F, 8 to 12 minutes per side.
  • Assemble the burgers: Spread 4 sweet potato rounds each with mango chutney. Top with the patties and 1/4 of the coleslaw and sandwich with the remaining sweet potato rounds.

Time 40m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 teaspoons allspice berries
1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 clove garlic
1 tablespoon vinegar
1/4 cup minced chives
1 lb lean ground turkey or 1 lb ground pork
1 egg
1 cup fresh breadcrumb

Steps:

  • Toast the allspice berries lightly in a dry skillet, then grind them and the peppercorns finely.
  • Mix with the remaining dry spices.
  • Mince the garlic, and add it to the spices, with the vinegar and the minced chives.
  • Add the meat, egg and breadcrumbs, and mix very well.
  • Form into 4 patties and broil on both sides until done; about 15 to 20 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right beef. Use a blend of ground chuck and ground sirloin for a juicy and flavorful burger. If you prefer a leaner burger, use ground turkey or chicken.
  • Make sure the beef is cold before cooking. This will help the burger stay juicy and prevent it from overcooking.
  • Don't overmix the beef. Overmixing the beef will make the burgers tough. Just mix the beef until it is evenly combined.
  • Season the beef liberally. Use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika to season the beef.
  • Form the burgers into patties that are about 1/2-inch thick. This will ensure that the burgers cook evenly.
  • Cook the burgers over medium heat. This will help the burgers cook evenly without burning them.
  • Don't flip the burgers too often. Flip the burgers only once, when they are cooked about halfway through.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check the burgers for doneness. The burgers are done when they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit for medium-rare, 165 degrees Fahrenheit for medium, or 170 degrees Fahrenheit for well-done.
  • Let the burgers rest for a few minutes before serving. This will help the juices redistribute throughout the burgers.

Conclusion:

These jerk burgers are a delicious and easy-to-make meal. They are perfect for a summer cookout or a weeknight dinner. Serve the burgers on a bun with your favorite toppings, such as lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese. You can also add a side of fries, coleslaw, or potato salad.
