This made for a very enjoyable lunch, and kept warm in a slow cooker, could also work very nicely for a Super Bowl party. It tastes enough like a traditional beef Sloppy Joe to provide that satisfying comfort food fix, yet seems much lighter.

ITALIAN SLOPPY JOES

Italian Sloppy Joes image

This popular sloppy Joe was created by a cook named Joe in 1930 at a Sioux City, Iowa, cafe, and was first described as a loose meat sandwich. Since then, it's been a popular sandwich in homes and restaurants everywhere. My version goes Italian, thanks to the addition of garlic, basil, and oregano.

4 portobello mushrooms
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup diced onion

Tips:

  • Use ground turkey: Ground turkey is a leaner and healthier alternative to ground beef, making it a perfect choice for a healthier sloppy joe filling.
  • Season the turkey well: Before cooking the turkey, be sure to season it with a variety of spices and herbs to give it plenty of flavor. Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and chili powder are all great options.
  • Cook the turkey until it's browned: Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the turkey, or it will steam instead of brown. Cook it in batches if necessary, and make sure it's cooked through before adding it to the sauce.
  • Use a flavorful sauce: The sauce is what really makes a sloppy joe, so be sure to use a flavorful one. This recipe uses a combination of tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard, but you can adjust the ingredients to suit your taste.
  • Serve on your favorite bun: Sloppy joes can be served on a variety of buns, including hamburger buns, hot dog buns, or even slider buns. Choose your favorite bun and enjoy!
