GRILLED ITALIAN HAMBURGERS

Grilled Italian Hamburgers image

This is an absolutely wonderful grilled Italian hamburger. You may add a little garlic powder also, and top with a thin slice of Mozzarella cheese as well. I do suggest you make the full recipe as leftovers never last more than two days at my house. These are wonderful with a big slice of very sweet onion and catsup. Some people like to add a slice of Mozzarella cheese before popping them in the foil and before heating again.

Time 1h45m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 pounds lean ground beef
1 pound bulk sweet Italian sausage
1 tablespoon minced onion
1 teaspoon minced garlic
2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon light olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 teaspoons anise seed
¼ cup melted butter
6 baguettes (14 to 16 inches), halved crosswise and split

Steps:

  • Mix the ground beef, sausage, onion, garlic, Italian seasoning, olive oil, salt, pepper, and anise seed together in a bowl until thoroughly combined. Chill in refrigerator at least 1 hour. Mix again after refrigerating. Divide the mixture into 12 portions and form into oblong burgers with rounded edges, approximately 4 inches wide and 12 inches long. They should be somewhat thin.
  • Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat, and lightly oil the grate. Also, preheat an oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Lightly brush the butter over the cut sides of the baguettes.
  • Cook on the preheated grill until the burgers are cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes per side. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 160 degrees F (70 degrees C). About 5 minutes before the meat is finished, lay the open baguette halves on the grill and brown each side until toasted. Place each burger into the baguette, close the baguette, and then wrap snugly with aluminum foil.
  • Bake the wrapped sandwiches in the preheated oven for 15 minutes before serving.

ITALIAN MEATBALLS (HAMBURGERS, TOO!)

Italian Meatballs (Hamburgers, too!) image

These meatballs are fantastic and fantastically easy to make. Better yet, with a slight adjustment to the recipe, they make juicy, tasty hamburgers - a two-for-one recipe! This recipe can easily be "sized up" to feed more. For "warm up" the next day, I cut the meatballs nearly in half (better to heat through), put in the oven,...

Categories     Beef

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 lb ground beef
4 oz ricotta cheese
1 c parmesan cheese
1 c bread crumbs, seasoned
1 egg
2 clove garlic, minced

Steps:

  • 1. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Shape mixture into balls, smaller than a golf ball. (Hint: coat your hands with olive oil before mixing and making the balls and the mixture won't stick to your hands.)
  • 2. Drop the balls into sauce (see my sauce recipe (separate from this recipe)) that is bubbling in a deep frying pan, add 1/2 to 1 cup of water (depends on how thick your sauce is, cooking time thickens your sauce, plus the meatballs like a "steamy" bath) to "steam" the meatballs. Cook 15 minutes, turn the meatballs (add more water if sauce has thickened too much), and cook another 10-15 minutes.
  • 3. Serve with pasta, or in rolls as a sandwich, or as smaller balls on toothpicks for an appetizer. Truly a go-to, mix-and-match recipe - enjoy!
  • 4. (If you want to do hamburgers, use 3/4 cup of bread crumbs and a little less ricotta and a little less parmesan, and cook in pan w/a little olive oil until done to your preference - well-done, medium, etc.)

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ground beef: The quality of the ground beef you use will have a big impact on the flavor of your hamburgers. Look for ground beef that is at least 80% lean, and avoid using ground beef that has been frozen for more than a few months.
  • Season the ground beef liberally: Don't be afraid to season the ground beef generously with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. You can also add other spices, such as chili powder, cumin, or oregano, to taste.
  • Mix the ground beef gently: Overmixing the ground beef will make it tough. Mix the ground beef just until it is evenly combined.
  • Form the hamburgers into patties: Use your hands to form the ground beef into patties that are about 1/2-inch thick. Make sure the patties are evenly shaped, so they will cook evenly.
  • Cook the hamburgers over medium-high heat: Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the hamburgers for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they are cooked to your desired doneness.
  • Let the hamburgers rest before serving: Once the hamburgers are cooked, let them rest for a few minutes before serving. This will help the juices redistribute throughout the hamburgers, making them more tender and flavorful.

Conclusion:

Italian hamburgers are a delicious and easy-to-make meal that are perfect for a weeknight dinner or a backyard barbecue. With a few simple tips, you can make sure your Italian hamburgers turn out perfectly every time.

Here are a few additional tips for making the best Italian hamburgers:

  • Use a variety of toppings to create your own unique Italian hamburgers. Some popular toppings include mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, lettuce, onion, and mushrooms.
  • Serve Italian hamburgers with your favorite sides, such as fries, onion rings, or a salad.
  • Italian hamburgers can also be made ahead of time and frozen. Simply cook the hamburgers according to the recipe, then let them cool completely. Place the cooked hamburgers in a freezer-safe bag and freeze for up to 3 months. When you're ready to serve, simply thaw the hamburgers in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for 30 minutes, then reheat them in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through.
