Yield 16 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 (1/4 ounce) package Red Star active dry yeast
1 cup scalded milk
1/2 cup butter
2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 egg
3 1/2-4 cups pillsbury's best all-purpose flour
1 lb shredded cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons onions, finely chopped
1/4 cup warm water

Steps:

  • Soften yeast in water. Combine in mixing bowl milk, butter, sugar, and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Blend in egg and yeast. Gradually add flour to form a stiff dough; beat well after each addition. Cover. Let rise in a warm place until light, about 1 hour.
  • Combine cheese and onion. Roll out dough, 1/2 at a time, on floured surface to 14x8 rectangle. Cut into 7x2 inch pieces. Place about 3 rounded tablespoons cheese down center of each. Bring edges to center; seal. Seal ends. Place seam-side down, on cookie sheets. Repeat with remaining dough. Let rise in warm place, 30 minutes.
  • Fry in heavily-buttered skillet on medium heat, about 2 minutes on each side. Turn carefully to brown all sides. Add butter as needed. Serve hot.

When I was 18 and newly married, experimenting with all kinds of cook books, to feed the new husband, I ran across this yummy treat he just adored.

Time 2h35m

Number Of Ingredients 12

HOT CHEESE PUPS
1 pkg active dry yeast
1/4 c warm water
1 c milk, scalded
1/4 c butter
2 Tbsp sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 egg
3 1/2 - 4 c all purpose flour
1 lb cheddar cheese or american
onion powder or finely chopped onion
butter

Steps:

  • 1. Skillet 325 degrees
  • 2. Soften yeast in warm water. Combine milk, butter, sugar, salt, and egg in mixing bowl. Cool to lukewarm. Add 1 cup flour; beat well. Stir in yeast. Add remainder of flour, stirring to form a stiff dough. Cover; let rise in warm place until light and doubled, about an hour. Roll out dough, half at a time, on floured surface to a 14x8 inch rectangle. Cut into 8 7x2 inch pieces. Cut your cheese into sticks about 6 inches long and 1/2 inch thick. Place one in center of each piece of dough. Sprinkle each with onion powder or 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped onion. Bring edges to center; pinch to seal. Seal ends. Place seam-side down on tray. Cover; let rise in warm place, about 30 minutes. Fry in heavily buttered skillet on medium heat (325-350) about 2 minutes on each side. Turn carefully to brown all sides. Add more butter as necessary. Serve hot.
  • 3. Tips: For variety, add crumpled crisp bacon with cheese. Or, fill with frankfurters instead or with the cheese. To reheat, place on ungreased cookie sheet. Place uncovered in 350 oven for 15 minutes. *If using self rising flour omit the salt.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality cheese. Freshly grated mozzarella or cheddar cheese will give you the best results. Avoid pre-shredded cheese, as it contains additives that can prevent it from melting smoothly.
  • Don't overfill the wonton wrappers. Too much filling will make it difficult to seal the wrappers and will cause them to burst open during frying.
  • Be careful not to overcrowd the pan when frying. Frying too many cheese pups at once will cause the oil temperature to drop, resulting in soggy cheese pups.
  • Serve the cheese pups hot. Cheese pups are best enjoyed when they are hot and gooey. Serve them immediately after frying, with your favorite dipping sauce.

Conclusion:

Hot cheese pups are a delicious and easy-to-make snack or appetizer. They are perfect for parties or gatherings, and they can also be enjoyed as a quick and satisfying meal. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a batch of cheese pups that will be sure to please everyone.
