Time 4h10m

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 pound pork hock ((also called ham hock) (or 2 cups cooked ham chunks))
36 ounces green beans (, fresh or frozen (in bite-size pieces))
3 cups water
4 large potatoes (, yellow or red, skin on, cut in bite-size chunks)
1 Tbsp thyme (, dry)
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
½ tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt (, more to taste)
¼ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp ground cinnamon
oil (, just a drizzle (about 1-2 Tablespoons))

Steps:

  • Add the ham hock (or ham chunks) to the bottom of the crock pot, then pour in the green beans, water, and potato chunks. Don't cut the potatoes too large, or they will have a hard time getting done when everything else is ready. I like to go for 1 inch or smaller.
  • Next, you will add the thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, cloves, and cinnamon. Mix together thoroughly, and then drizzle with a bit of oil (1-2 tablespoons) before covering.
  • Cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6-7 hours. This all depends on whether you'll be home or not and how quickly you need it to be done. Don't overcook, as the green beans will turn to mush. You do want the potatoes to get done, though.
  • Once the green beans and potatoes are cooked, you will remove the ham hock and let it cool a bit before dicing up the ham. Turn the crockpot on the warm setting while cooling and cutting up the ham pieces. Add the ham pieces back in and serve.

This recipe is very similar to one my mother used to make and that I still make a few times a year, only I use smoked sausage instead of ham. This looks yummy and makes for a nice change. Recipe & photo: stockpilingmoms.com

HAM, GREEN BEANS, AND POTATOES (SLOW COOKER)

Ham, Green Beans, and Potatoes (Slow Cooker) image

This is my first original recipe, but I welcome criticism! (although my boyfriend had thirds and then passed out on the couch). I knew I wanted to cook ham shanks in the crock pot, but I couldn't find any recipes that were quite what I was looking for. The ingredients I listed here will fill a 3 quart pot, but I imagine quantities are flexible.

Provided by ktstwrt

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 8h15m

Yield 3 quarts, 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 (1 1/2 lb) ham shank (a ham hock may be acceptable, but it doesn't have as much meat)
3 -4 large potatoes, peeled (or not)
1 lb fresh green beans, rinsed with the ends cut off
1 cup chicken broth
1 (15 ounce) can green beans, juice extracted (NOTE ( I only use the juice from the canned beans, not the beans themselves)
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • 1. Place whole ham shank in slow cooker.
  • 2. Cover ham with prepared fresh green beans and potatoes.
  • 3. Pour chicken broth and canned green bean juice over all ingredients.
  • 4. Top with salt and pepper.
  • 5. Cook on low 7-8 hours.
  • 6. In the last hour of cooking, remove the bone from the ham shank. The meat should fall off pretty easily (or at least be close to it). Keep meat in slow cooker and continue cooking for 30 minutes.

Tips:

  • Select fresh and high-quality ingredients for the best flavor. Fresh green beans, tender red potatoes, and thick-cut ham steaks are recommended.
  • Rinse the green beans thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris before cooking.
  • For added flavor, use chicken broth instead of water. You can also add a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce or a teaspoon of dried thyme for extra seasoning.
  • Cover the crock pot to prevent moisture from escaping and ensure even cooking. This will also help the flavors meld together.
  • Cook the dish on low heat for 6-8 hours or on high heat for 3-4 hours, depending on the desired tenderness of the vegetables.
  • Serve the ham, green beans, and potatoes immediately after cooking, garnished with fresh parsley or chives for added color and flavor.

Conclusion:

This crock pot ham, green beans, and potatoes recipe is an easy and convenient way to prepare a hearty and flavorful meal. With minimal preparation and cooking time, you can enjoy a delicious and satisfying dish that is perfect for busy weeknights or casual gatherings. Whether you prefer tender ham, crisp green beans, or soft andfluffy potatoes, this recipe offers a well-balanced combination of flavors and textures that will please everyone at the table. So next time you're looking for a simple yet satisfying meal, give this crock pot recipe a try and experience the convenience and flavor it has to offer.
