Thick, soft, buttermilk sugar cookies are the best cutout cookies. Similar to lofthouse cookies, these are perfect with a dollop of buttercream frosting.

1 cup buttermilk (divided)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup salted butter (softened)
2 cups granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
Frosting and sprinkles (optional)

Steps:

  • Combine 1/2 cup buttermilk and baking soda in a small bowl. Set aside until step 5.
  • In a stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar.
  • Add eggs, salt, vanilla and 1/2 cup buttermilk. Mix well.
  • Add 3 cups of flour and the baking powder. Blend until combined.
  • Add the buttermilk/baking soda mixture and the last 3 cups of flour. Mix until the flour is completely incorporated.
  • Wrap the cookie dough in plastic wrap and gently press it into a disc. Be sure it is wrapped tightly and refrigerate the dough overnight.
  • When you're ready to roll out the dough, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Sprinkle a pastry mat with flour. Divide the dough in half and roll out one-half of the dough, sprinkling flour on top of the dough as needed.

2 c sugar
1 egg
1 c buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda
1 c crisco, melted
1 tsp baking powder
4 c flour

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • 2. Mix sugar and eggs very well. Then add buttermilk and baking powder, blend well.
  • 3. Next, add baking soda and flour, mixing well. Stir in Crisco until blended.
  • 4. Place in refrigerator and chill.
  • 5. Roll cookies into 1/4 inch thickness and cut to desired shape.
  • 6. Place cookies on baking sheet and bake on bottom rack until puffy (about 8 min.), then place baking sheet on upper rack for 2 to 3 minutes until browned.
  • 7. Let cool and turn onto platter.

2 cups sugar
1 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
ICING:
4 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 to 2/3 cup evaporated milk
Assorted food coloring and decorations of your choice

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream the sugar, butter, vanilla and salt. Add eggs and mix well. Combine the flour, baking powder and baking soda; add to creamed mixture. Chill until firm, about 1 hour., On a floured surface, roll dough to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut shapes with cookie cutters; place on greased baking sheets. Bake at 375° for 7-12 minutes (depending on size) or until light golden brown.
