HOMEMADE GRAIN-FREE DOG FOOD

Homemade Grain-Free Dog Food image

My dog is getting older and his health has become more of a priority. I worry about how many nutrients kibble may lose through the cooking process. So, I developed this homemade dog food recipe to include all of the vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids that my dog needs. It took me a bit of research to figure out what foods in what proportions to use. The protein ingredients include liver and poultry (dark meat poultry is best), sunflower oil for linoleic acid, and 10 other essential amino acids that dogs must get in their diet.

GRAIN-FREE BEEF DOG FOOD TREAT

Grain-Free Beef Dog Food Treat image

I found this great treat recipe on all-natural-dog-treat.com It's completely grain free making it wonderful for pets who are allergic to grains and for owners who prefer to minimize the amount of grain products their pets eat. Note: This recipe can also be a good homemade meal for your dog. Sept, 2008: I originally published this recipe as a treat recipe. Since it doesn't seem to hold together very well it's now been changed to a dog food recipe. When I get a chance to play around with it I'll see if it can be made into a treat recipe again. I would only give this to my dog in small portions as a treat or to add flavour to her regular food.

Categories     Pet Food

Time 9h50m

Yield 30

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 pounds organic carrots
3 pounds organic apples, peeled and cored
4 pounds fresh or frozen green beans, thawed
2 (16 ounce) packages organic frozen blueberries
1 pound organic baby spinach
¾ cup olive oil, divided
¾ cup coconut oil, divided
3 pounds 85% organic, grass-fed lean ground beef
2 (15 ounce) cans pumpkin puree

Steps:

  • Wash and trim ends of carrots. Peeling is unnecessary if using organic ones. Cut into small enough pieces to chop in a food processor and set aside. Chop apples, green beans, blueberries, and spinach in the food processor and set aside.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon coconut oil in a large (at least 10-quart) stockpot and saute carrots until softened, about 5 minutes. Add apples, green beans, blueberries, and spinach and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until cooked through, 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon coconut oil a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir ground beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Add to stockpot. Add pumpkin puree, remaining olive oil and coconut oil and mix everything until well combined. Cover and allow to cool.
  • Refrigerate for 8 hours, or overnight. Divide desired portions into resealable plastic bags, removing as much air as possible, and freeze until needed.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality ingredients: Use fresh, human-grade beef and wholesome grains like brown rice or oats. Avoid ingredients that are processed, contain fillers, or are high in sugar.
  • Use a food processor or blender: This will help you create a smooth and consistent dough that is easy to work with and shape.
  • Chill the dough before baking: This will help the treats hold their shape and prevent them from spreading too much in the oven.
  • Bake the treats until they are golden brown: This will ensure that they are cooked through and have a crispy texture.
  • Let the treats cool completely before storing them: This will help them keep their shape and prevent them from becoming soggy.

Conclusion:

With a little time and effort, you can easily make delicious and nutritious grain-free beef dog food treats at home. These treats are a great way to show your dog how much you care and are sure to be a hit with your furry friend. So next time you're looking for a healthy and homemade treat for your dog, give this recipe a try!
