REFRIED BEANS WITHOUT THE REFRY

Refried Beans Without the Refry image

Refried beans made simple in a crock pot...a great and low fat alternative to canned beans. If you like variety, black beans can be substituted for part of the pinto beans. Note: Since reviewers commented on the salt, I've reduced the amount. If you think this may still be too much salt for you, add it at the end and to your personal taste. Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Choose the right beans: Pinto beans are the traditional choice for refried beans, but you can use any type of bean you like. Black beans, kidney beans, and lentils are all good options.
  • Soak the beans overnight: This will help to soften the beans and make them easier to cook. If you don't have time to soak the beans overnight, you can quick-soak them by boiling them for 1 minute and then letting them sit for 1 hour.
  • Use a slow cooker: A slow cooker is a great way to make refried beans. Simply add the beans, water, and seasonings to the slow cooker and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-6 hours.
  • Mash the beans: Once the beans are cooked, you can mash them with a potato masher or a food processor. If you want smooth refried beans, you can mash them until they are completely smooth. If you want a more rustic texture, you can leave some of the beans whole.
  • Season the beans: Season the refried beans with salt, pepper, cumin, and chili powder. You can also add other seasonings, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika.

Conclusion:

Refried beans are a delicious and versatile dish that can be served in many different ways. They can be used as a dip, a spread, or a side dish. They can also be used in burritos, tacos, and quesadillas. No matter how you serve them, refried beans are sure to be a hit.
