ETHIOPIAN TOMATO SALAD - TIMATIM FIRFIR

Ethiopian Tomato Salad - Timatim Firfir image

From an Ethiopian video site. While this is an authentic recipe, it does not contain the typical Ethiopian berbere seasoning, nor does it have torn bits of injera. Which works for me - no access to any ethnic grocery store and I'm a wimp for heat!

Time 15m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 cups ripe tomatoes, seeded & diced or 2 cups cherry tomatoes, diced
1 1/2 cups cucumbers, diced
1/4 cup sweet onion, diced
1 green hot pepper, seeded and finely diced
4 teaspoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar or 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil

Steps:

  • Toss together all ingredients except olive oil.
  • Sprinkle with olive oil.

Tips:

  • Select ripe, firm tomatoes: Choose tomatoes that are fully ripe and free of blemishes. This will ensure the best flavor and texture in your salad.
  • Use a sharp knife: A sharp knife will help you cut the tomatoes evenly and cleanly. This will also prevent the tomatoes from tearing or bruising.
  • Use fresh herbs: Fresh herbs, such as cilantro and parsley, will add a bright, flavorful touch to your salad. If you don't have fresh herbs on hand, you can use dried herbs, but be sure to use less, as they are more concentrated.
  • Adjust the spice level to your liking: If you like spicy food, you can add more berbere or chili powder to your salad. If you prefer a milder flavor, you can use less or omit the spices altogether.
  • Serve immediately: Ethiopian tomato salad is best served immediately after it is made. The tomatoes will start to release their juices over time, which will dilute the flavor of the salad.

Conclusion:

Ethiopian tomato salad, also known as Timatim Firfir, is a refreshing and flavorful salad that is easy to make. With its vibrant colors and tangy dressing, this salad is a perfect side dish or light lunch. It is also a great way to use up leftover tomatoes. So next time you have a few ripe tomatoes on hand, give this salad a try. You won't be disappointed!
