Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 Orange (untreated organic,*see notes)
10 Cloves
1 Vanilla Bean (or extract,*see notes)
3¾ cups Red Wine (*see notes)
1 cup Water
1 Cinnamon stick
1 Star Anise
pinch Nutmeg
Sugar (to your liking)

Steps:

  • Wash your orange well to get rid of impurities, pat dry and cut into thick slices.
  • Poke cloves into orange slices. This is to prevent the spices to fall into the mulled wine, and it will be easier to collect them afterward. Besides, it looks great too.
  • Slice the vanilla bean lengthwise and scratch out and collect the vanilla bean seeds.
  • Pour wine into a saucepan with the water and heat up gradually.
  • Place orange slices with cloves into the pan. Also add the vanilla bean with scratched out seeds, cinnamon stick, anise and nutmeg
  • Keep on slow heat (it should never boil!) and cover the pot for 15-20 minutes. You can keep the mulled wine to infuse away from the heat if you like.
  • Take out all the spices and orange slices. You can strain the mulled wine too if you don't want the fruit pulp in it.
  • Make sure your mulled wine is kept on a steady heat. Sweeten your gluhwein to your liking and serve hot.

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 8

½ medium orange
¾ cup water
¼ cup sugar
1 cinnamon Stick
10 cloves
1 star Anise
750 ml red wine (: 1 bottle of preferably cabernet sauvignon)
1½ oz rum ( or Grand Marnier: optional)

Steps:

  • Peel a medium size orange and save the peels. Pierce the cloves into one or more of the orange peels and set aside. Extract the juice from the orange and keep aside. Optionally, you can strain it to avoid any citrus fibers in the drink.
  • Turn on the Instant pot and select Saute on high. Add sugar and water and stir well. Bring the water to a boil and heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
  • Reduce the Saute setting to LOW. Add orange juice, orange peels, cinnamon, star anise, and the orange peels with cloves in it. Simmer for 2 minutes
  • Add red wine and let it steam, not boil. Takes between 4-6 minutes, depending on the size of the pot.
  • Hit Cancel and Turn on 'Keep warm' mode. This will keep the Mulled wine at a nice warm temperature for the evening. Add the rum or grand marnier just before serving.

GLUEHWEIN

Gluehwein image

Gluehwein is a German/Austrian winter-holiday drink that most tourists know as an after-ski drink. After you come in out of the snow, it is supposed to make you glow with warmth again. Watch it: Since you drink this wine warm, the alcohol goes to your head extra quick! Drink when you really have come in, and do not have to go out again! This is the one my father used to make for New Year's Eve.

GLUHWEIN (MULLED WINE)

Gluhwein (Mulled Wine) image

This very easy recipe comes from Winemaker magazine. I liked it because I had all of the ingredients on hand, it is really fast, and because it warmed me up and helped alleviate the symptoms of the cold I had at the time. According to the recipe source, the mixture can be kept warm in a crockpot, or on a coffee warmer (covered) for several hours, and can be successfully reheated the next day. (Mine never lasted long enough for me to testify to the above statement.)

Tips:

  • Choose a high-quality red wine for the best flavor. A fruity, medium-bodied red wine like Pinot Noir or Merlot works well.
  • Use fresh spices for the best flavor. Whole spices will give you a more intense flavor than ground spices.
  • Simmer the wine and spices for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Serve the Glühwein hot and garnish with a cinnamon stick, orange slice, or star anise.
  • Add a splash of brandy or rum for an extra kick.
  • Make a non-alcoholic version of Glühwein by using apple cider instead of wine.

Conclusion:

Glühwein is a delicious and festive drink that is perfect for enjoying during the winter months. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. Whether you like it sweet, spicy, or tart, there is a Glühwein recipe out there for you. So next time you are looking for a warm and comforting drink, give Glühwein a try.
