**Indulge in a Delightful Culinary Journey with Maple Sausage Popovers: A Symphony of Sweet, Savory, and Fluffy Goodness**

Begin your culinary adventure with a tantalizing treat that harmonizes the sweetness of maple, the savory goodness of sausage, and the airy lightness of popovers. This irresistible dish, hailing from the realm of oven-baked wonders, promises a symphony of flavors and textures that will awaken your senses and leave you craving more.

Our culinary expedition begins with a straightforward popover batter, crafted from a harmonious blend of all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, eggs, and milk. This versatile foundation sets the stage for the infusion of maple syrup, a natural sweetener that imbues the popovers with a delicate touch of sweetness.

Next, we introduce the savory element: succulent sausage, cooked to perfection and crumbled into a golden-brown delight. This symphony of flavors is further enriched by the addition of chopped walnuts, providing a delightful textural contrast and nutty undertones.

As the popover batter and sausage-walnut mixture unite, a culinary masterpiece takes form. The batter, filled with pockets of air, rises majestically in the oven's embrace, creating popovers that are irresistibly light and airy. Their golden-brown exterior beckons, promising a crispy shell that yields to a soft and fluffy interior.

This delectable dish is a culinary chameleon, adapting effortlessly to your taste preferences. Serve them warm, accompanied by a dollop of butter or a drizzle of maple syrup, for a sweet and savory breakfast or brunch experience. Alternatively, transform them into delightful dinner companions by filling them with your favorite savory ingredients, such as scrambled eggs, cheese, or roasted vegetables.

Our culinary journey offers two variations of this popover perfection: the Classic Maple Sausage Popovers and the Sausage, Bacon, and Maple Popovers. The classic version showcases the harmonious blend of maple and sausage, while the bacon-infused variation adds an extra layer of smoky, salty goodness.

Prepare to embark on a taste sensation that will leave your taste buds dancing with delight. These Maple Sausage Popovers are not just a meal; they are an experience that will elevate your culinary horizons.

Categories     main-dish

Time 1h5m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 21

Maple-Mustard Glazed Canadian Bacon:
1/4 cup grade B pure maple syrup
1 heaping tablespoon Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons canola oil
6 slices thick-cut Canadian bacon
Vermont Cheddar and Herb Scramble:
12 cherry tomatoes, halved
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
12 large eggs
3 ounces grated aged white Vermont Cheddar
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh chives
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley leaves
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh tarragon
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
Popovers:
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus more for greasing pans
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup whole milk, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
2 large eggs, at room temperature

Steps:

  • For the canadian bacon: Whisk the maple syrup and mustard in a small bowl. Set aside. Heat the canola oil in a large cast-iron pan over high heat. Add the Canadian bacon and cook until browned on the bottom, about 3 minutes. Flip and brush generously with the maple syrup mixture. Cook for another 2 minutes, and then transfer to a platter.
  • For the cheddar and herb scramble: Heat the canola oil over high heat in another cast-iron skillet. Add the cherry tomatoes cut-side down and cook until seared, 1 to 2 minutes. Season them with salt and pepper, and transfer to a plate.
  • Whisk together the eggs, Cheddar, chives, parsley and tarragon in a large bowl and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Heat the butter in a large nonstick pan over medium-low heat until it begins to sizzle. Add the egg mixture and slowly cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, until soft curds form. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  • For the popovers: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Generously brush a 6-slot aluminum popover pan with softened butter. Place the pan in the oven to heat 5 minutes before you are ready to add the batter.
  • Whisk together the melted butter, flour, milk, salt, pepper and eggs until smooth. The batter should be thin. Fill the popover pans less than halfway full and bake for exactly 30 minutes. Do not open the oven door while popovers are baking. Make the popovers last because they need to be eaten almost immediately once removed from the oven.
  • For assembly: Open the popovers and fill each half with a slice of the bacon. Top each with the eggs, and a cherry tomato half. Serve the remaining tomatoes on the side.

POPOVERS

Popovers image

Popovers begin with essentially the same batter as Yorkshire pudding. Purists will tell you that what makes Yorkshire pudding so great is that it's cooked in beef drippings. But butter isn't a bad stand-in, and popovers are pretty easy. You can buy special popover pans, with deeper, narrower cups which force the tops up in a more pronounced fashion, but I wouldn't bother. Any muffin pan will produce a perfect popover if the butter is hot, the batter is rich and smooth and the baker is patient. But the patience ends when the popovers are done: they must be eaten right away.

Time 45m

Yield 12 popovers

Number Of Ingredients 7

5 tablespoons melted butter
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried), optional

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Drizzle a teaspoon or so of melted butter in each cup of a 12-cup muffin pan or a popover tin and put it in oven while you make batter.
  • Beat together the eggs, milk, 1 tablespoon butter, sugar and salt. Beat in the flour a little bit at a time and add thyme if using; mixture should be smooth.
  • Carefully remove muffin tin from oven and fill each cup about halfway. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue baking for 15 minutes more, or until popovers are puffed and browned. Do not check popovers until they have baked for a total of 30 minutes. Remove from pan immediately and serve hot.

SAUSAGE POPOVERS

Sausage Popovers image

This is one of those basic dishes that you can spiff up in anyway you please. You can add cheese, veggies or anything that you like to make it more savory for a main course dinner. I can think of about a 10 herbs that would taste great in this depending on what meats and vegetables you use.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 (8 ounce) package brown and serve sausages (or any other cooked meats and/or vegetables that you like)
2 beaten eggs
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Grease bottom of an 8 inch baking pan.

  • Beat together the eggs, milk, oil, four and salt until smooth.
  • Pour batter into the greased pan and top with meat (and anyother leftovers you would like to use) Bake 35 minutes.

Tips:

  • For the popovers to rise properly, make sure the eggs and milk are at room temperature.
  • Be sure to preheat the oven to the correct temperature before baking the popovers.
  • Do not open the oven door while the popovers are baking.
