Time 1h20m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 tsp active dry yeast
1 1/4 c warm milk (110 - 115 degrees)
1/4 c butter, softened
2 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 egg yolk
3 3/4 c flour

Steps:

  • 1. In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. Add the butter, sugar, salt and egg yolk; mix well. Stir in enough flour to form a soft dough.Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour
  • 2. Punch dough down. Shape into 12 balls. Push thumb through centers to form a 1-in. hole. Place on a floured surface. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes;
  • 3. In a large saucepan, bring water to a boil. Drop bagels, one at a time, into boiling water. When bagels float to the surface, remove with a slotted spoon and place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Bake at 400 degrees F for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.

Tips:

  • Use bread flour: Bread flour has a higher protein content than all-purpose flour, which results in a chewier bagel.
  • Boil the bagels before baking: Boiling the bagels before baking creates a shiny, chewy crust.
  • Use a baking stone: A baking stone helps to create a crispy bottom on the bagels.
  • Don't overproof the bagels: Overproofing the bagels will result in a dense, chewy bagel.
  • Be patient: Making bagels takes time, but the results are worth it!

Conclusion:

Bagels are a delicious and versatile bread that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. With a little bit of time and effort, you can easily make delicious bagels at home. So next time you're craving a bagel, don't go to the store - make your own!
