SAND DESSERT AKA VANILLA "DIRT DESSERT"

Sand Dessert Aka Vanilla

The first time I made this was for my son's Pirate theme birthday party. I made it in a casserole dish and put plastic pirate toys on top. It's become a family favorite, especially since my son doesn't like chocolate. My husband took this to work for a potluck. It disappeared quickly and he was asked to bring it again.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Cookies: Oreo cookies are the classic choice for dirt dessert, but you can use any chocolate sandwich cookie you like. If you want a richer flavor, try using double-stuff Oreos or dark chocolate Oreos.
  • Crush the Cookies Finely: The finer you crush the cookies, the better the dirt dessert will look. You can use a food processor or a blender to crush the cookies, or you can put them in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
  • Use a Good Quality Pudding Mix: The pudding mix is the base of the dirt dessert, so it's important to use a good quality mix. Look for a mix that is made with real cocoa powder and milk, and avoid mixes that are made with artificial flavors and colors.
  • Don't Overmix the Pudding: Overmixing the pudding will make it tough and rubbery. Be careful not to overmix it, and stop mixing as soon as the pudding has thickened.
  • Chill the Pudding Before Assembly: Chilling the pudding before assembly will help it to set and make it easier to handle.
  • Use a Variety of Toppings: The toppings are what really make the dirt dessert special. You can use gummy worms, crushed Oreos, chocolate chips, or anything else you like. Get creative and have fun!
