Steps:
- 1. Directions: 1. Place rack in center of oven. Preheat oven to 350F. Line a square baking dish 20 cm (8 inches) with parchment paper or just grease your dish with butter.
- 2. Filling 1. In a saucepan, boil the dates and water and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until the dates are pureed. Let cool.
- 3. Crisp: 1. In a bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar and baking soda. Add butter and mix well. 2. Spread half of the crisp in the pan and press firmly. Spread the date mixture. Cover with remaining crisp and press lightly. Bake about 35 minutes or until crisp is golden brown. Cool on a wire rack, remove from pan and cut into 16 squares.
Tips:
- Use a good quality date paste. This will ensure that your date squares are nice and moist. If you can't find date paste, you can make your own by blending pitted dates with a little bit of water until smooth.
- Don't overcook the date filling. It should be thick and bubbly, but not too thick or it will be difficult to spread.
- Use a sharp knife to cut the date squares. This will help to prevent them from crumbling.
- Store the date squares in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will keep for up to 2 weeks.
Conclusion:
Date squares are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that are perfect for any occasion. They are also a good source of fiber and potassium. So next time you are looking for a sweet treat, try making date squares. You won't be disappointed!
