Time 7m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

1/4 cup vegetable oil
3 tablespoons margarine
1/2 cup unpopped popcorn
seasoning salt, to taste

Steps:

  • Start by cutting a paper grocery sack in half.
  • This will serve as a makeshift serving bowl and it will absorb excess oil.
  • In a 2 quart pot, combine the oil, margarine and popcorn.
  • Set over high heat, and constantly shake the pan back and forth.
  • After the first kernel of corn pops, place the lid on the pot, and continue shaking.
  • When the popcorn starts to lift the lid up off the pan, remove it from the heat, and hold it over the paper bag until it stops popping.
  • Pour into the paper sack and season with the seasoned salt.
  • Shake the paper sack to distribute the salt.
  • Taste before adding more so you don't make it too salty.
  • You can always add more salt.

Tips:

  • Choose the right popcorn kernels: Not all popcorn kernels are created equal. Some varieties, like butterfly popcorn, are better suited for popping than others. Look for popcorn kernels that are small and round, with a hard outer shell.
  • Use the right amount of oil: Too much oil can make your popcorn greasy, while too little oil can result in unpopped kernels. A good rule of thumb is to use 1 tablespoon of oil for every 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels.
  • Heat the oil over medium-high heat: This will help the popcorn kernels pop quickly and evenly.
  • Add the popcorn kernels to the hot oil: Be sure to spread the kernels out in a single layer so that they all have room to pop.
  • Cover the pot and shake it occasionally: This will help to distribute the heat and prevent the popcorn from burning.
  • Listen for the popping to slow down: Once the popping slows to a few seconds between pops, remove the pot from the heat.
  • Season the popcorn to taste: You can add salt, butter, pepper, garlic powder, and other spices to taste.

Conclusion:

With these tips in mind, you'll be able to make delicious, fluffy popcorn at home that's sure to please everyone. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy snack, reach for some popcorn kernels and give it a try!
