Tips:
- Choose the right potatoes: Russet potatoes are the best choice for mashed potatoes because they are starchy and have a fluffy texture. Yukon Gold potatoes are a good alternative for a creamier mashed potato.
- Peel and cut the potatoes evenly: This will help them cook evenly.
- Do not overcook the potatoes: Overcooked potatoes will be gummy and watery. Cook them until they are tender but still hold their shape.
- Drain the potatoes thoroughly: This will help to remove excess water and make the mashed potatoes fluffy.
- Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or ricer: A potato masher will give you a more rustic texture, while a ricer will give you a smoother texture.
- Add butter, milk, and seasonings to taste: Start with a small amount of butter and milk and then add more to taste. Season the mashed potatoes with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Garnish the mashed potatoes with chives, parsley, or bacon bits: This will add flavor and color to the dish.
