HASH BROWNS

Crispy hash browns are a must for the full English breakfast. With just three ingredients and being freezeable, too, they're easy to add to your next fry up

Time 30m

Yield Makes 8 (serves 4)

Number Of Ingredients 3

3 medium-sized potatoes (approx. 370g in total, unpeeled, left whole - Maris Pipers, King Edward and Desirée are all good choices)
50g butter, melted
4 tbsp sunflower oil

Steps:

  • Cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water for 10 mins then drain and set aside until cool enough to handle.
  • Coarsely grate the potatoes into a bowl discarding any skin that comes off in your hand as you grate. Season well with salt and pepper and pour over half the butter. Mix well then divide the mix into 8 and shape into patties or squares. The hash browns can be prepared a day ahead and chilled until ready to cook or frozen for up to a month.
  • To cook, heat the oil and the remaining butter in a frying pan until sizzling and gently fry the hash browns, in batches if needed, for 4-5 mins on each side until crisp and golden. Serve straight away or leave in a low oven to keep warm.

COMPANY HASH BROWNS

Company Hash Browns image

This recipe was on the Ore-Ida Hash Brown package, and it's a quick dish to throw together. Just need a little patience to wait for it to bake for an hour. It called for frozen chopped onions, but I used regular onions (I didn't know you could buy frozen chopped onions). I left off the butter and cornflake topping, and it was still very good. Next time I think I'd throw in some jalapenos or something to spice it up, and a little cheddar cheese would really be over the top. Serving size is estimated.

HASHED BROWNS

Provided by Ina Garten

Time 35m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

5 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 1/2 pounds boiling potatoes, peeled and 1/2-inch diced
1 1/2 cups chopped yellow onions (2 onions)
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons minced fresh flat-leaf parsley
2 tablespoons minced scallions (white and green parts)

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large (10 to 12-inch) saute pan. Add the potatoes, onions, salt, and pepper and cook over medium-low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, turning occasionally with a flat spatula, until the potatoes are evenly browned and cooked through. (Allow the potatoes to cook for 5 minutes before turning.) Turn off the heat and add the parsley and scallions. Serve hot.

Tips:

  • Use fresh potatoes: Fresh potatoes will give you the best flavor and texture. If you're using russet potatoes, make sure they're firm and not sprouting.
  • Shred the potatoes coarsely: This will help them cook evenly. If you shred them too finely, they'll turn mushy.
  • Season the potatoes well: Don't be afraid to add plenty of salt, pepper, and garlic powder. You can also add other spices, such as paprika, cumin, or chili powder.
  • Cook the potatoes over medium heat: This will prevent them from burning. Cook them until they're golden brown and crispy.
  • Serve the potatoes immediately: Hash browns are best when they're hot and fresh. You can top them with your favorite toppings, such as cheese, sour cream, or salsa.

Conclusion:

Hash browns are a versatile and delicious breakfast side dish. They're easy to make and can be customized to your liking. Whether you like them crispy or soft, cheesy or plain, there's a hash brown recipe out there for everyone. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy breakfast, give hash browns a try. You won't be disappointed!
