OLD BISQUICK STREUSEL COFFEE CAKE RECIPE

Old Bisquick Streusel Coffee Cake Recipe image

This is what used to be on the Bisquick box. This old recipe is moister and has a better topping (if you like gooey crannies) than the recipe on the box now (2008). For my family this is "Grandma's coffee cake" which she makes by the yard when we are together. It is easy to double (and we often do this) and then cook in two round pans. A doubled recipe can also be cooked in a larger rectangular pan (not sure of the cooking time though - sorry)

Time 32m

Yield 1 9 inch coffee cake, 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 cups Bisquick baking mix
2/3 cup milk or 2/3 cup water
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons oil (old variation)
1 egg
2 tablespoons Bisquick
1/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter (better with butter) or 2 tablespoons hard margarine (better with butter)
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 375ºF.
  • Grease 9-inch round pan.
  • Make Cinnamon Streusel; reserve. (my sister often doubles this recipe so that there is lots of topping).
  • Stir coffee cake batter ingredients until blended.
  • Spread in pan.
  • Sprinkle with Cinnamon Streusel.
  • Bake 18 to 22 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let sit a few minutes and then serve warm with butter and lots of milk or coffee.

Tips:

  • For a moist and tender coffee cake, use buttermilk instead of regular milk. Buttermilk reacts with the baking soda and baking powder to create a light and fluffy cake.
  • To achieve a crispy crumb topping, use cold butter. When the butter is cold, it will create small pockets of steam in the oven, which will help the topping rise and crisp.
  • For a sweeter coffee cake, add an extra 1/2 cup of sugar to the batter. You can also sprinkle additional sugar on top of the crumb topping before baking.
  • For a more flavorful coffee cake, use a dark roast coffee. Dark roast coffee has a more intense flavor that will come through in the cake.
  • If you don't have Bisquick on hand, you can make your own. To make 1 cup of Bisquick, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

Conclusion:

Bisquick coffee cake is a classic breakfast treat that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With its moist and tender crumb, crispy crumb topping, and sweet and flavorful coffee flavor, this cake is sure to be a hit. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy breakfast or brunch recipe, give Bisquick coffee cake a try. You won't be disappointed!
