Baked Pork Chops With Onions and Chili Sauce image

This is a quick pork recipe that I throw together fairly regularly because it's easy, requires few ingredients and is a big hit with the kids.

Categories     Pork

Time 50m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 boneless pork loin chops, butterflied
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, sliced
1/8 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup Heinz Chili Sauce

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375.
  • Pound the chops thin with a meat tenderizer.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium high heat and brown the chops lightly on each side.
  • Move the chops to a shallow baking dish. Scatter the sliced onions over the chops, sprinkle with brown sugar and pour the chili sauce over all.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes (or until done, depending on the thickness of your chops). I usually flip them midway through so that they cook evenly in the sauce on both sides.
  • Smother chops with onions and sauce and serve.

Provided by Food Network

Time 35m

Yield 2 to 2 1/2 cups

Number Of Ingredients 10

3 tablespoons butter
3 pounds sweet onions, Vidalia or Texas sweets, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 tablespoons ancho chili powder
3 tablespoons tomato paste
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup bourbon
1 cup beef broth

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large casserole over low heat. Add the onions, add the salt and pepper and stir to coat well. Cook very slowly over slow heat until the onions are soft and translucent. In rapid succession add the chili powder and stir to incorporate fully. Stir in the tomato paste and sugar and moisten with the vinegar. Continue to cook over low heat. As the liquids begin to bubble, be careful not to burn the tomato and sugar. Nothing should caramelize in this dish. Add the bourbon carefully, allowing the alcohol to burn off. Add the broth and braise, with a lid on, until the onions are nearly dry.
  • May be served hot or cold.

CHILI ONIONS

Categories     Onions

Time 15m

Yield 1/2 cup

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 tablespoon canola oil
1 onion, cut into 3/8 inch dice
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
salt

Steps:

  • In a small skillet over medium-high heat, heat the oil. Mix in the onion, chili powder, cumin and 1/4 teaspoons salt. Saute until the onion is translucent and crisp-tender, 4 minutes. Adjust the seasoning with salt to taste. Cool to room temperature.

Tips:

  • Choose the right variety of onion: Red onions and yellow onions are commonly used for chili onions. Red onions provide a milder flavor, while yellow onions offer a sharper taste. Experiment with different varieties to find your preferred flavor profile.
  • Slice the onions thinly and evenly: Thinly sliced onions will cook more evenly and absorb the marinade better. Use a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer to ensure uniform slices.
  • Use a flavorful vinegar: The type of vinegar used in the marinade greatly influences the taste of your chili onions. Popular choices include apple cider vinegar, white vinegar, and red wine vinegar. Experiment with different vinegars to find the flavor that best complements your onions.
  • Add spices and herbs to the marinade: Infuse your chili onions with additional flavors by adding spices and herbs to the marinade. Common options include chili flakes, garlic, ginger, and cumin. Adjust the quantities to suit your taste preferences.
  • Let the onions marinate for at least 30 minutes: The longer the onions marinate, the more flavorful they will become. Allow them to marinate for at least 30 minutes at room temperature or up to overnight in the refrigerator.
  • Use a combination of heat sources: For a well-rounded flavor, cook the chili onions using a combination of heat sources. Start by sautéing them on the stovetop to caramelize the sugars. Then, transfer them to the oven for a gentler, more even cooking process.

Conclusion:

Chili onions are a versatile condiment that can elevate the flavors of various dishes. With their sweet, tangy, and slightly spicy taste, they add a delightful complexity to tacos, sandwiches, burgers, and more. Experiment with different recipes to find the perfect balance of flavors and heat that suits your palate. Whether you prefer a milder or a bolder taste, chili onions are sure to become a staple in your kitchen. Enjoy them as a flavorful addition to your favorite meals!
