Great onions that go with anything that is grilled on the BBQ. A TV chef did this once and it has been a family faviorite since. Only problem is I have never measured ingredients - so adjust to suit your own taste! Also great on a sausage sandwich.

Tips:

  • Selecting the Right Onions: Choose medium-sized yellow or white onions for caramelizing. These varieties have a higher sugar content, which helps them caramelize beautifully.
  • Slicing the Onions: Slice the onions thinly and evenly to ensure uniform caramelization. Thickly sliced onions may not caramelize properly.
  • Using the Right Pan: Opt for a heavy-bottomed pan or Dutch oven to distribute heat evenly and prevent the onions from burning.
  • Low and Slow Caramelization: Caramelize the onions over low heat and stir them frequently to prevent sticking and promote even browning.
  • Adding Liquid: To prevent the onions from drying out, add a small amount of liquid such as water, broth, or white wine. This helps release the natural sugars in the onions and facilitates caramelization.
  • Deglazing the Pan: Once the onions are caramelized, deglaze the pan with a splash of vinegar or balsamic vinegar to dissolve any browned bits and enhance the flavor.
  • Adding Barbecue Sauce: For a sweet and smoky twist, stir in your favorite barbecue sauce towards the end of the caramelization process. This adds a delicious glaze to the onions.
  • Storing Caramelized Onions: Allow the caramelized onions to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
