Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
- Place the bacon on a sheet pan fitted with a wire rack. Roast the bacon until crispy, about 20 minutes.
- Pour the bacon fat from the sheet pan into a large skillet and warm over medium-high heat. Add the onions to the skillet and cook, stirring frequently, for about 1 minute, then sprinkle in the garlic powder, ground mustard, pepper and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are browned, soft and caramelized, 30 to 45 minutes. Set aside.
- Preheat the broiler.
- Stir together the cream cheese, yogurt, mayonnaise, parsley, Worcestershire, 1/2 cup Cheddar, 1/2 cup Swiss and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt until completely combined. Stir in the warm onions.
- Cut the top of the boule off and hollow out the center. Place the boule on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Save the scooped out chunks of bread and cut the removed top into pieces to dip later.
- Fill the boule with the onion mixture and sprinkle the top with the remaining cheeses, holding back a tablespoon of each. Cut the bacon into 2-inch pieces and arrange them like the rays of the sun around the perimeter of the dip, then sprinkle the remaining cheese in the middle, overlapping the bacon to make an extra-cheesy center. Broil, watching closely to prevent burning, until the bacon is crisp and the cheese is melted beneath, about 2 minutes. Serve warm with crudites and reserved chunks of bread and use the bread bowl/bacon for dipping!

SLOW-COOKER CARAMELIZED ONION DIP
With sweet, melty onions mixed into a creamy base and brought to life with a couple of savory ingredients, this luscious dip will keep everyone hovering around the bowl and, in between bites, talking to each other about how good it is! And since that's what parties are all about, we think this is the recipe you need next time you entertain. The inspiration behind this recipe was the crowd-favorite onion dip that you buy in a tub at the grocery store, but our goal wasn't simply to replicate. While we wanted to hit the same savory and rich notes of the original dip, we also wanted to create something new that would be worth the effort to make from scratch, without demanding too much effort. This wasn't too big a challenge for the Betty Crocker Test Kitchen experts, who came up with the idea of caramelizing onions in a slow cooker, so all you really have to do is chop the onions and forget about them for the rest of the day. With such a flavorful base, it doesn't take much to round out the recipe: cream cheese, a little mayo, fresh herbs, a dash of soy sauce-that's really all there is to it. Next time you have people coming around, give this recipe a try.

PAULA DEEN'S CARAMELIZED VIDALIA ONION AND BLUE CHEESE HOT DIP
This is a quick and easy dip to make that everyone seems to love. I used panko bread crumbs because that is what I had in my pantry. I also found that you needed to cut the onion pieces into smaller strips (I took the onion and cut it in half and then half again). I also used Clemson Blue Cheese.

CARAMELIZED SWEET ONION DIP
From Cooking Light 11/08....."Caramelizing enhances the onion's inherent sweetness. If you can't find sweet onions, substitute two large Spanish onions and add a tablespoon of sugar. This dip is best served warm. If time is tight, you can caramelize the onions (step 2) earlier in the day; combine with the other ingredients and bake just before guests arrive. Serve with a crunchy dipper like melba toast."

Steps:
- If serving the dip in Spanish-onion "bowls": Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut the top third off each onion, and discard. Trim bottoms so that onions are level when set in a baking dish. Drizzle with some olive oil; season with salt. Bake until soft, 1 to 1 1/4 hours. When onions are cool enough to handle, pull out and discard all but the outermost 2 or 3 layers. Set "bowls" aside.
- Heat olive oil in a medium heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high until hot but not smoking. Cook sliced onions, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown, about 15 minutes. Cover; reduce heat to low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 40 minutes.
- Raise heat to medium, and season onions with salt. Stir in vinegar; simmer until mixture is dry. Stir in thyme; remove from heat. Let cool; coarsely chop onions.
- With an electric mixer, beat cream cheese in a medium bowl until smooth. Fold in sour cream and caramelized onions with a rubber spatula; season with salt and pepper. Divide dip among onion "bowls," or transfer to a dish. Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate 1 hour.
- Make garnish if desired: Heat the safflower oil in a medium skillet over high until hot. Thinly slice the remaining small onion, and fry in small batches until crisp, about 1 minute. Drain on paper towels. Garnish with crisp onions; serve with roasted fingerling potato crisps if desired.
Tips:
- Use high-quality ingredients. This will make a big difference in the flavor of your dip. Use fresh onions, a good quality cheese, and a flavorful sour cream.
- Caramelize the onions slowly and patiently. This will allow them to develop a deep, rich flavor.
- Don't be afraid to experiment with different flavors. You can add herbs, spices, or even a splash of wine to your dip.
- Make sure your dip is well chilled before serving. This will help it to set and make it easier to scoop.
- Serve your dip with a variety of dippers. This could include crackers, chips, vegetables, or even bread.
Conclusion:
Caramelized onion dip is a delicious and versatile appetizer that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. With these tips, you can make the perfect caramelized onion dip that will be a hit at your next party or gathering.
