CAJUN SPICE SEASONING MIX IN A JAR

Cajun Spice Seasoning Mix in a Jar image

A spicy and attractive gift and tastes great on potatoes, eggs, and meat.

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 7

¾ cup salt
¼ cup ground cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons ground white pepper
2 tablespoons ground black pepper
2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons onion powder
2 tablespoons garlic powder

Steps:

  • While holding a pint canning jar at an angle, add ingredients to create a "sand art" look. The salt and cayenne may be divided into smaller portions and used to separate other spices. I found it simplest to use 7 cups--one with each spice in it--and add them to my jar with a spoon, as I want to create the special look.

CAJUN SPICE MIX

Cajun Spice Mix image

This is a great spice mix to use when blackening anything. It is particularly good on fish. I think this was from a Paul Prudhomme recipe. You can play with the amounts of the spices to suit your own tastes.

Provided by LifeIsGood

Categories     Cajun

Time 10m

Yield 4-6 tablespoons

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 tablespoon paprika
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground red pepper
3/4 teaspoon white pepper
3/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves

Steps:

  • Mix all of the spices together. Done!

Tips:

  • Use fresh spices: Freshly ground spices have a more intense flavor than pre-ground spices. If you can, buy whole spices and grind them yourself just before using.
  • Toast your spices: Toasting spices before using them will bring out their flavor and aroma. You can toast spices in a dry skillet over medium heat for a few minutes, or in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-15 minutes.
  • Use a variety of spices: Don't be afraid to experiment with different spices. The more spices you use, the more complex the flavor of your dish will be.
  • Start with a small amount of spice and adjust to taste: It's easy to add more spice, but it's difficult to remove it. So, start with a small amount and add more to taste.
  • Store your spices properly: Spices should be stored in a cool, dark place in airtight containers. This will help to preserve their flavor and aroma.

Conclusion:

Homemade Cajun spice mix has a robust, complex, and spicy flavor that brings a kick to many dishes. It is an excellent addition to a variety of dishes, including chicken, fish, shrimp, vegetables, and soups. With a few simple ingredients and easy steps, you can make your own Cajun spice mix in no time and enjoy the authentic taste of Louisiana cuisine.
