  • In a large saucepan, place steamer basket over 1 in. of water. Place cabbage in basket. Bring water to a boil. Reduce heat to maintain a simmer; steam, covered, just until tender, 6-8 minutes., Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp, stirring occasionally. 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 head red cabbage (2 1/4 pounds), halved, cored, and cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch-thick slices
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup dry red wine
3/4 cup water
2 tablespoons dark-brown sugar
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1 Golden Delicious apple, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
