¼ cup unsalted butter
1 cup dark brown sugar (packed)
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
¾ cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup chopped nuts (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350F and grease an 8x8 baking dish.
  • Melt butter over stovetop or at 50% power in the microwave. Remove from heat and stir in sugar, egg and vanilla; mix until completely incorporated.
  • Stir in remaining ingredients. The mixture will be thick. Spread in greased baking dish. Bake 20-25 minutes in preheated oven. The bake time will depend on the dish you choose!
  • Betty Crocker suggests cutting these while still warm. I think they actually cut cleaner when completely cooled. Not that I waited until they were cooled to eat one. No patience! Makes 16 bars.

BETTY CROCKER'S BUTTERSCOTCH BROWNIES

Betty Crocker's Butterscotch Brownies image

Betty Crocker used to sell squares like these in a mix as she does brownies. They were delicious and why they were discontinued so long ago is beyond me. I am glad I came across this recipe and just hope they are as good as I remembered! The recipe also refers to these as Praline Squares.

Tips:

  • To achieve the perfect fudgy texture, use a combination of butter and vegetable oil in the batter. Butter provides richness and flavor, while vegetable oil helps keep the brownies moist and chewy.
  • Don't overmix the batter. Overmixing can result in a tough, dense brownie. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Use high-quality chocolate chips. The better the chocolate, the better the brownies. Look for chocolate chips that are at least 60% cacao.
  • Don't overbake the brownies. Overbaking will result in dry, crumbly brownies. Bake the brownies until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached.
  • Let the brownies cool completely before cutting them. This will help them set and prevent them from falling apart.
  • For a richer flavor, try using brown sugar instead of granulated sugar in the batter.
  • To add a crunchy topping, sprinkle chopped nuts or toffee bits on top of the brownies before baking.
  • For a fun twist, try swirling a different flavor of brownie batter into the butterscotch batter before baking.
  • For a decadent treat, serve the brownies warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Conclusion:

Betty Crocker's butterscotch brownies are a classic dessert that is sure to please everyone. With their fudgy texture, rich flavor, and gooey butterscotch chips, these brownies are irresistible. Whether you are a seasoned baker or a beginner, this recipe is easy to follow and will yield delicious results.
