Time 1h30m

Yield 24

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 (18.25 ounce) package devil's food cake mix
½ (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
6 ounces caramel ice cream topping
3 (1.4 ounce) bars chocolate covered toffee, chopped
1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

Steps:

  • Bake cake according to package directions for a 9x13 inch pan; cool on wire rack for 5 minutes. Make slits across the top of the cake, making sure not to go through to the bottom.
  • In a saucepan over low heat, combine sweetened condensed milk and caramel topping, stirring until smooth and blended. Slowly pour the warm topping mixture over the top of the warm cake, letting it sink into the slits; then sprinkle the crushed chocolate toffee bars liberally across the entire cake while still warm. (Hint: I crush my candy bars into small chunks as opposed to crumbs - I like to have pieces I can chew on!)
  • Let cake cool completely, then top with whipped topping. Decorate the top of the cake with some more chocolate toffee bar chunks and swirls of caramel topping. Refrigerate and serve right from the pan!

Tips:

  • Use room temperature ingredients: This will help your cake batter mix more evenly and produce a more consistent cake. Soften your butter ahead of time and bring eggs to room temperature by placing them in a bowl of warm water.
  • Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy: This will incorporate air into the mixture, resulting in a lighter and more tender cake. Use a stand or hand mixer on medium speed for 2-3 minutes.
  • Gradually add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition: This will prevent the eggs from curdling. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  • Sift the flour and baking powder together before adding it to the batter: This will help to ensure that the flour is evenly distributed and to prevent lumps in the batter. Whisk the flour and baking powder together in a separate bowl before adding them to the batter.
  • Do not overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter can produce a tough and dense cake. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the cake in a preheated oven: This will help to ensure that the cake rises evenly. Preheat the oven to the desired temperature before placing the cake in the oven.
  • Do not open the oven door during baking: This can cause the cake to fall. Allow the cake to bake undisturbed until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool completely before frosting: This will help to prevent the frosting from melting. Let the cake cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
