These make a great, easy meal. They're also great to make/take for large gatherings; you can put the ham barbecue in a crock pot to keep warm. I sometimes put a slice of cheese on them before serving.

PITTSBURGH HAM BARBECUE SANDWICHES

There are various versions of this recipe on zaar, but this one is my favorite. The key ingredient is the chili sauce, preferably Heinz. In Pittsburgh, Isaly's "chipped chopped" ham is the brand of choice but it is hard to find outside of western Pennsylvania. The best alternative is to have the butcher slice the ham very thin (almost like shaving it), and then chop all those slices coarsely. These sandwiches are a hot and sweet treat with a little spice and a Pittsburgh favorite. I got it from a local Pittsburgh cookbook.

Busy Fogelsville, Pennsylvania cook Constance Eddy writes, This tangy sauce freezes well and is even better when it's reheated. "It's great on hot dogs, too! You can also fix it ahead...and keep it warm in the slow cooker if you make a larger amount for picnic or party fare."

Tips:

  • Use a good quality ham for the best flavor. Choose a ham that is fully cooked, but not overly salty.
  • To make the sandwiches ahead of time, cook the ham and barbecue sauce according to the recipe instructions. Then, assemble the sandwiches without the bread. Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 2 days. When ready to serve, toast the bread and assemble the sandwiches.
  • For a vegetarian version of the sandwich, use grilled tofu or tempeh instead of ham.
  • Add your favorite toppings to the sandwiches, such as cheese, lettuce, tomato, or onion.
  • Serve the sandwiches with a side of potato chips, coleslaw, or baked beans.

Conclusion:

Barbecue ham sandwiches are a classic summer meal that are perfect for picnics, potlucks, or backyard barbecues. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences.
