A&W WHISTLE DOG

A&w Whistle Dog image

I worked at A&W in the Montreal area during my college years and, by far, these were the best "non-steamie" hot dog around! Easy to make and so tasty. In the '70s we used Canadian back bacon - nowadays, they use regular bacon - both taste great. Ohhhhh, the memories :-)

Tips:

  • Choose the right sausage: Opt for a high-quality whistle dog sausage, such as the ones made with 100% beef or pork, and avoid those with fillers.
  • Prepare the sausages properly: Thaw frozen sausages overnight in the refrigerator or under cold running water for 30 minutes. Then, pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  • Use a well-seasoned cast iron skillet: Cast iron skillets provide even heat distribution, resulting in perfectly browned and crispy sausages.
  • Cook the sausages over medium heat: Avoid high heat, as it can cause the sausages to burn on the outside while remaining raw on the inside. Medium heat allows the sausages to cook evenly throughout.
  • Flip the sausages frequently: Use tongs to flip the sausages every 2-3 minutes to ensure they brown evenly on all sides.
  • Add water or broth to the skillet: Adding a small amount of water or broth to the skillet prevents the sausages from sticking and adds flavor.
  • Cook the sausages until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C): Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the sausages to ensure they are cooked thoroughly.
  • Let the sausages rest before serving: Allow the sausages to rest for a few minutes before serving to redistribute their juices, resulting in a more flavorful and tender sausage.

Conclusion:

Cooking whistle dogs is a simple and versatile task that yields delicious results. Whether you prefer them grilled, pan-fried, or baked, whistle dogs are a crowd-pleasing dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. With the right ingredients and techniques, you can create mouthwatering whistle dogs that will satisfy your taste buds and leave you craving more.
