SIMPLE PUFF PASTRY APPLE DESSERT

Simple Puff Pastry Apple Dessert image

These are easy to make and really tasty. I just made another batch and found that I like them even better using brown sugar. I also had to add 2 tsp of flour as a thickener to this batch because the apples released a lot of juice.

Time 1h

Yield 9 turnovers, 9 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

9 puff pastry, squares (5x5)
5 apples, peeled, cored and sliced into wedges
1 teaspoon lemon juice
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/3 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons cream (you can use half and half)
3 tablespoons turbinado sugar

Steps:

  • 1. Prepare apples. I peel them and then use a corer/slicer that gives you 8 wedges. Cut each wedge into 3 pieces. Place cut apples in a bowl of water with the lemon or lime juice as you cut it so it won't discolor. When you are done cutting all apples, drain them well.
  • 2. In a very large skillet, melt the butter over a low/medium heat and toss in the apples.
  • 3. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. I use golden delicious apples (NOT red delicious, which will turn to mush) Cortlands are really good too. If you use a tart apple, like granny smith, you will need to increase the sugar to 1/2-2/3 cups.
  • 4. Cook the apples until they are a little soft, but not cooked to mush. Cool for 5 minutes.
  • 5. Fill the 5x5 inch puff pastry squares & close in a triangular shape, pinching the edges well all around. Place on a baking sheet.
  • 6. Brush cream on each one & sprinkle with raw sugar.
  • 7. Place in preheated 400 degree oven until nicely browned. It usually takes about 20 minutes, but watch after 15 minutes, so that they don't burn. I have found that they bake best on the middle shelf. The tops burn on the top shelf and the bottoms burn on the bottom shelf, so bake in two batches if you have to.

Tips:

  • Use firm, tart apples for best results. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn are all good choices.
  • Peel the apples before wrapping them in puff pastry. This will help the pastry to brown evenly.
  • Brush the apples with melted butter before wrapping them in puff pastry. This will help to keep the apples moist.
  • Sprinkle the apples with cinnamon sugar before wrapping them in puff pastry. This will add a delicious flavor to the apples.
  • Bake the apples at a high temperature (400 degrees Fahrenheit) for a short period of time (20-25 minutes). This will help to create a crispy pastry and tender apples.
  • Serve the apples warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Conclusion:

Apples wrapped in puff pastry are a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a dish that is sure to impress your family and friends. So next time you're looking for a sweet treat, give this recipe a try.
