Best 11 Apple Pasties Recipes

facebook share image   twitter share image   pinterest share image   E-Mail share image

Apple pasties are a delightful handheld treat that combines the flavors of sweet apples, warm spices, and flaky pastry. Originating in Cornwall, England, these pasties were traditionally made with leftover beef or mutton, but over time, the vegetarian version filled with apples and spices became equally popular. Today, apple pasties are enjoyed as a comforting snack or dessert, often served with a cup of tea.

This article presents a collection of three enticing apple pasty recipes that cater to different dietary preferences. The first recipe features the classic apple pasty, made with a combination of sweet and tart apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg, all encased in a golden puff pastry. The second recipe is a vegan apple pasty, using plant-based butter and milk to create a flaky and flavorful pastry. Lastly, the gluten-free apple pasty offers an alternative for those with gluten sensitivities, using a combination of almond flour, oat flour, and tapioca flour to create a crispy and tender crust.

Let's cook with our recipes!

APPLE CINNAMON SLAB PIE

Apple Cinnamon Slab Pie image

This apple slab pie is easy and quick to make and you don't even have to struggle with making your own dough; a store-bought puff pastry will work just fine. You can use your favorite apples for this but there's nothing quite like a caramelized, slightly tart granny smith. I should say this though; if you're serving more than 4 people, you ought to double the recipe and make 2. That's easy since a package of puff pastry comes with two sheets!

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb 2 large apples (I used granny smith apples), peeled, cored and cut into 1/3" slices
4 Tbsp unsalted butter
1/4 cup brown sugar (lightly packed)
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 sheet (8 or 9 oz frozen puff pastry, thawed (I used Pepperridge Farms))
All purpose flour for dusting
1 egg (lightly beaten for egg wash)
Coarse sugar for sprinkling (I used raw sugar)

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, melt 4 Tbsp butter over medium heat. Add sliced apples and cook, stirring occasionally until lightly browned (6-8 min). Reduce heat to low and stir in 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon. Continue to simmer, stirring occassionally until apples are soft and caramelized (5 min).
  • Lightly dust a sheet of parchment paper with flour. Place your thawed puff pastry dough over it and roll it out slightly to flatten the top (9 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches). Cut puff pastry dough in half down the center to make two pieces (each 4 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches)
  • Arrange apples in a tight row lengthwise down the middle of one puff pastry sheet leaving a one inch border on all sides. Pour remaining syrup from the apples over the top of the apples. Brush your beaten egg around the edges of your pastry. Top with the second pastry sheet and press down on the edges to seal.
  • Cut 6 (1-inch wide) slits down the center of your pastry to create vents.
  • Brush the pastry with egg wash and sprinkle the top generously with coarse sugar. Bake at 400˚F for 15-17 min or until top is golden brown.

Bake a batch of these moreish pasties, filled with cheese, apple and potato. You only need five simple ingredients

Provided by Esther Clark

Categories     Lunch, Snack

Time 1h20m

Number Of Ingredients 5

300g cold butter
500g plain flour , plus extra for dusting
2 medium potatoes (about 400g), halved and thinly sliced
3 Granny Smith apples , peeled and sliced
350g hard cheese , grated (Lincolnshire Poacher or Cornish cheddar work well)

Steps:

  • Line a baking tray with baking parchment. Dice 250g of the butter and tip into a mixing bowl. Add the flour, 1 tsp salt and 1½ tsp black pepper and rub together with your fingers until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs, or use a food processor. Stir in 8 tbsp cold water, then bring the mixture together with your hands to create a firm, smooth dough. Cover and chill for 20 mins.
  • Cut the dough into six equal-sized pieces and roll each portion into a ball. Chill, covered, for a further 15 mins. Meanwhile, tip the potatoes, apples, cheese and some seasoning into a bowl and toss together.
  • Lightly dust a work surface with flour, then roll out one of the dough balls to form a 22cm round. Spoon one-sixth of the potato mix down the centre of the round, then pinch the edges together to make a sealed parcel. Repeat with the remaining dough balls and filling. Transfer the pasties to the lined baking tray and chill for 30 mins.
  • Heat the oven to 220C/200Cfan/gas7. Melt the remaining butter in a small saucepan over a low heat, then generously brush over the pasties. Bake for 20 mins, then turn the heat down to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and cook for 25-30 mins more, or until golden brown.

Tips:

  • For a flaky crust, use cold butter or margarine and work it into the flour quickly until it resembles coarse crumbs. Avoid overworking the dough, as this can make it tough.
  • If the dough is too dry, add a little cold water one tablespoon at a time until it comes together. If the dough is too wet, add a little more flour one tablespoon at a time until it is no longer sticky.
  • To prevent the pasties from drying out, brush them with milk or egg wash before baking. This will also help them to brown nicely.
  • Bake the pasties until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. The cooking time will vary depending on the size and thickness of the pasties.
  • Allow the pasties to cool for a few minutes before serving. This will help to prevent the filling from running out.

Conclusion:

Apple pasties are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They are also a great way to use up leftover apples. With a few simple ingredients and a little time, you can create these delicious pastries that are sure to please everyone.
