AMISH BROWN SUGAR HAM STEAK AND SCALLOPED POTATO SKILLET, VINTAG

Amish Brown Sugar Ham Steak and Scalloped Potato Skillet, Vintag image

This is quite different from the usual cubed ham/potato casserole. The little bit of brown sugar flavors the potatoes and ham as well the sauce. An attractive presentation and a family favorite for years. Even the kids liked it. You can sub half&half or milk for the evaporated milk, in which case just use 1 cup of milk and forget the water. But then again, the evaporated milk adds a little something to the flavor.

Tips:

  • Choose a thick-cut ham steak for the best results.
  • Use a sharp knife to score the ham steak, this will help the marinade penetrate the meat.
  • If you don't have a skillet that is oven-safe, you can transfer the ham steak and potatoes to a baking dish before baking.
  • Be sure to cover the skillet or baking dish tightly with foil before baking, this will help the ham steak and potatoes cook evenly.
  • To make sure the ham steak is cooked through, insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the meat. The internal temperature should read 140 degrees Fahrenheit for medium-rare, 150 degrees Fahrenheit for medium, or 160 degrees Fahrenheit for well done.

Conclusion:

This Amish Brown Sugar Ham Steak and Scalloped Potato Skillet is a delicious and easy one-pan meal that is perfect for a weeknight dinner. The ham steak is tender and juicy, the potatoes are creamy and flavorful, and the brown sugar glaze adds a touch of sweetness. This dish is sure to be a hit with the whole family.
