This is my kids' favorite meal. And it's so easy to prepare, that they often do it themselves! It's very cheesy! I've also made this and cooked it in the microwave during the summer. Freezing instructions included. If you prefer, you may sub in ricotta cheese for the cottage cheese.

I adapted this recipe for my crock-pot. Having 2 devout carnivores and 1 devout vegetarian in the house, it pleased both. I have a smaller crockpot that I use for my vegetarian crockpot and I added meat last.

1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon parmesan cheese
1 1/2 ounces pepperoni

Steps:

  • Cook pasta until just tender.
  • Cook ground beef until no longer pink, drain.

  • Combine water and remaining tomato sauce and pour over pasta mixture.
  • Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and remaining mozzerella cheese.
  • Top with pepperoni.
  • Cover and bake on low for 5 to 6 hours.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Pasta: Medium-sized pasta like ziti, penne, or rigatoni works best for this casserole. Smaller pasta like macaroni or shells can get lost in the dish.
  • Cook the Pasta Al Dente: Don't overcook the pasta, as it will continue to cook in the casserole. Cook it al dente, or slightly firm to the bite.
  • Use High-Quality Pepperoni: The quality of the pepperoni can make a big difference in the taste of the casserole. Choose a brand that you enjoy the taste of and that has a good amount of spice.
  • Don't Overcrowd the Pan: When browning the pepperoni, don't overcrowd the pan. This will prevent the pepperoni from getting crispy.
  • Use a Cast Iron Skillet or Dutch Oven: A cast iron skillet or Dutch oven is the best choice for making this casserole. These pots heat evenly and retain heat well, which is important for getting a nice crispy crust on the casserole.
  • Don't Skip the Breadcrumbs: The breadcrumbs add a nice crispy texture to the casserole. Don't skip them!
  • Serve with a Side of Marinara Sauce: A side of marinara sauce is a great way to add extra flavor and moisture to the casserole. You can also use Alfredo sauce or pesto.

Conclusion:

Ziti pepperoni casserole is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It's also a great way to use up leftover pasta and pepperoni. With a few simple tips, you can make a casserole that is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
