I rarely make my pot roast the same, but this one turned out so well I wrote it down. It also makes it's own gravy.

1 lb button mushrooms
2 bay leaves

few dash(es) worcestershire sauce
good quality olive oil to brown the meat
all purpose flour to dredge the meat in

Time 6h15m

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 lb beef chuck roast
1 medium package of red potatoes
1 lb organic carrots
1/2 bulb of garlic
1 qt water
2 Tbsp beef base
salt and pepper to taste
1 sprig(s) rosemary
2 quartered onions

Steps:

  • 1. Gather all ingredients.
  • 2. Put a crockpot liner into crockpot.
  • 3. Half red potatoes and put into crockpot.
  • 4. Add whole carrots to crockpot.
  • 5. Add 2 quartered onions to crockpot.
  • 6. Place pot roast on top of veggies. Salt & pepper to taste.
  • 7. Boil 1 quart of water on the stove.
  • 8. Add two tablespoons of beef base. Dissolve base in water.
  • 9. Add the beef base to the crockpot. You can use beef stock instead of beef base but make it a really good stock.
  • 10. Add one sprig of Rosemary.
  • 11. Set crockpot to low and cook 6-8 hours.

Tips:

  • Choosing the right cut of beef: Chuck roast, rump roast, and brisket are commonly used for pot roast. Look for meat with good marbling (fatty streaks) to ensure tenderness.
  • Searing the meat: Searing the meat before braising helps develop flavor and color. Use a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat to get a nice sear on all sides of the meat.
  • Using a flavorful braising liquid: The braising liquid is crucial for adding flavor to the pot roast. Common options include beef broth, red wine, beer, or a combination of these. Add vegetables like carrots, celery, and onions to enhance the flavor further.
  • Slow-cooking: Pot roast is traditionally cooked low and slow to tenderize the meat and develop flavors. Braise the meat for at least 2-3 hours, or until it easily falls apart when prodded with a fork.
  • Adding vegetables: Vegetables not only add flavor but also nutrients to the pot roast. Carrots, potatoes, onions, celery, and parsnips are classic additions. You can also try adding mushrooms, bell peppers, or turnips for variety.
  • Thicken the sauce: If you desire a thicker sauce, remove the meat and vegetables from the pot and bring the braising liquid to a boil. In a separate bowl, mix cornstarch or flour with a small amount of water to form a slurry. Gradually whisk the slurry into the boiling liquid until the sauce reaches your desired consistency.

Conclusion:

Pot roast is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and loved by many. With the right ingredients and cooking techniques, you can create a tender, flavorful pot roast that will warm your heart and soul. Experiment with different cuts of meat, braising liquids, and vegetables to find your perfect pot roast recipe. So gather your ingredients, fire up the stove or oven, and let the aromas of a delicious pot roast fill your home. Happy cooking!
