THE ORIGINAL WALDORF SALAD

The Original Waldorf Salad image

"Millions who never visited the Waldorf owe him a debt," The New York Times wrote in 1950, upon Oscar Tschirky's death. Mr. Tschirky, a Swiss immigrant who became known as "Oscar of the Waldorf," is credited with creating this piece of Americana in 1893, a timeless dish whose popularity has spread far past the Waldorf's exclusive doors and into home kitchens. Over time, variations would include blue cheese, raisins and chopped walnuts, which can be added here alongside the celery and apples. But the original is an exercise in simplicity: four ingredients that have lived on for over a century.

Tips:

  • Use Fresh Fruit: Fresh fruits add vibrant flavors and textures to the salad. Choose crisp apples, juicy grapes, and sweet oranges for the best results.
  • Chop Fruits Evenly: Cut the fruits into uniform pieces so they blend well and are easy to eat.
  • Keep Nuts and Celery Crunchy: Toast the walnuts for a nutty flavor and add them just before serving to maintain their crunchiness. Cut the celery thinly and add it last to prevent it from wilting.
  • Make a Creamy Dressing: The creamy dressing is what brings the salad together. Use high-quality mayonnaise and Greek yogurt for a tangy and creamy base. Add some Dijon mustard and honey for extra flavor.
  • Chill Before Serving: For the best flavor and texture, chill the salad for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the dressing to set.

Conclusion:

Winter Fruit Waldorf Salad is a classic dish that combines sweet, crunchy, and creamy textures for a refreshing and satisfying salad. With its vibrant colors and delicious flavors, it's perfect for any occasion, whether it's a holiday gathering, potluck, or a light lunch. The combination of fresh fruits, crunchy nuts, and a creamy dressing makes it a delightful and nutritious meal that everyone will enjoy.
