You can put this stuffing together a few days before serving or up to 2 weeks ahead, then freeze it. Cover and store; thaw when ready to bake. I found this recipe in Prevention magazine. Tips:

  • Use a variety of vegetables for a more flavorful stuffing. Some good options include celery, onions, carrots, bell peppers, and mushrooms.
  • Add some fresh herbs to the stuffing for a pop of flavor. Some good options include sage, thyme, rosemary, and parsley.
  • Use a combination of bread cubes and cooked rice for a stuffing that is both fluffy and moist.
  • Don't overstuff the turkey. The stuffing should be cooked through, but it should not be so dense that it makes the turkey difficult to carve.
  • If you are making stuffing ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Whole wheat stuffing with turkey sausage is a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that is perfect for Thanksgiving or any other special occasion.
