Provided by Joey Firoben

Categories     Breakfast

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 large eggs
1 cup milk, of choice
2 tablespoons maple syrup, plus more for serving
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
salt, to taste
8 slices whole wheat bread
powdered sugar, for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Preheat Griddler, fitted with the griddle plates, to 375°F (190°C), and grease with nonstick spray.
  • Use a whisk to beat the eggs in a 9x13-inch (23x33-cm) casserole dish until smooth.
  • Add the milk, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt, and whisk until smooth and well combined.
  • Dunk the bread in the batter, 4 slices at a time, until just soaked. Do not let the bread soak in the wet ingredients too long or it will become too wet and fall apart when you attempt to pick it up.
  • Transfer the soaked bread to the Griddler and cook for 10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar, drizzle with maple syrup, and serve.
  • Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Selecting the Right Bread: Choose a high-quality, thick-cut whole wheat bread that can withstand the soaking process without becoming soggy. Look for bread that is at least 1 inch thick and has a sturdy texture.
  • Achieving the Perfect Egg Mixture: Whisk together eggs, milk, spices, and vanilla extract until well combined. Ensure the mixture is smooth and free of any lumps. Adjust the milk quantity as needed to achieve the desired consistency; it should be slightly thick but still pourable.
  • Soaking the Bread: Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring it is evenly coated on both sides. Allow the bread to soak for a few seconds per side, but not too long, as this can make the bread too soggy. You want the bread to absorb enough of the egg mixture to become flavorful and moist, but not so much that it loses its structure.
  • Cooking the French Toast: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add butter or cooking oil and swirl to coat the surface. Carefully place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning.
  • Serving and Garnishing: Serve the French toast immediately while it's hot and crispy. Garnish with fresh berries, sliced bananas, powdered sugar, maple syrup, or whipped cream. You can also drizzle some melted chocolate or Nutella on top for an extra touch of sweetness.
