WHISKEY OLD FASHIONED

Whiskey Old Fashioned image

An old-fashioned whiskey cocktail. This is the way we like ours -- fruity with a dash of bitters, soda, and plenty of rocks! Be sure to use a good bourbon. Bottoms up! Enjoy! From eHow. History (taken from about.com): The Old-fashioned is a classic whiskey cocktail that has been served since around 1880 at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky and is (disputedly) the first drink referred to as a cocktail. It is the perfect ideal of what a cocktail should contain: a spirit, a sweet, a bitter, a sour and water. Typically, the Old-fashioned is made with bourbon, however you can experiment with other types of whiskey for an equally excellent drink. Have a light old-fashioned with Canadian whiskey or one that's more sour with a Tennessee whiskey. Club soda is often used to top off this drink, but this is not a traditional method.

Time 5m

Yield 1 cocktail, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/2-2 shots bourbon whiskey
1 teaspoon sugar, to taste
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 1/2-2 ounces club soda
2 lemon slices
1 orange slice
1 maraschino cherry
2 tablespoons maraschino cherry juice (from the jar)
ice

Steps:

  • First you will want to grab a cocktail or rocks glass to mix your drink into.
  • Then, place a slice of lemon, orange, and a maraschino cherry into the glass.
  • Pour about two tablespoons of the maraschino cherry juice in with the fruit.
  • Next you will want to add about a spoonful of sugar.
  • Once the sugar is in the glass, pour in some club soda. You will only want to add about 1.5-2 ounces.
  • Next add just a dash of bitters, it's the secret to a good old fashioned.
  • Once you have reached this point in the drink where there is fruit, sugar, club soda, and bitters you are going to want to stir and mesh up your fruit in the bottom of the glass to release and mix the juices.
  • Once you have thoroughly mixed and meshed the juices, fill the rest of the glass with ice.
  • Now it is time to add the whiskey. Pour 1.5 to 2 shots of bourbon whiskey into the glass.
  • Lastly, Stir your drink and ad a lemon slice as a garnish on your glass. Enjoy!

WISCONSIN BRANDY OR WHISKEY OLD-FASHIONED

Wisconsin Brandy or Whiskey Old-Fashioned image

You can use your favorite brandy or whiskey (bourbon). You can also make this sweet or sour to your liking by using 50/50 or 7-Up. I've heard that this is a "regional" drink, because it's not as common outside of our state!

Time 2m

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 -3 ounces brandy or 2 -3 ounces whiskey
1 sugar cube (or 1 tsp. super-fine sugar)
2 -3 dashes Angostura bitters
sweet and sour soda (50/50 or Squirt brand) or carbonated lemon-lime beverage (7-Up)
1 pineapple chunk

3 manzanilla olives, pickled Brussel sprouts or 3 dilly beans

Steps:

  • Place the sugar cube and bitters into an old fashioned glass (8-12 oz. tumbler style glass) and muddle together with a spoon or muddler. (We prefer to use the super-fine sugar because you can stir it all together without muddling.).
  • Add some ice, to your liking.
  • Add the brandy or whiskey.
  • Top off the glass with either 50/50 soda or 7-up (sour or sweet!).
  • Garnish as described above.

OLD FASHIONED CREAMED CORN WITH WHISKEY

Old Fashioned Creamed Corn With Whiskey image

This recipe is best made with fresh corn that has been rushed from field to kitchen as quickly as possible. For not so fresh corn you may want to add 1/2 tsp. granulated sugar when you're cooking the corn in the butter. The Ontario Harvest Cookbook

Tips:

  • Use high-quality whiskey. The quality of the whiskey you use will greatly impact the taste of your Old Fashioned. Look for a whiskey that is at least 80 proof and has a good flavor profile. Some popular choices for Old Fashioneds include bourbon, rye, and Japanese whiskey.
  • Use fresh ingredients. Fresh citrus fruits and herbs will add a lot of flavor to your Old Fashioned. Avoid using bottled juices or dried herbs, as they will not provide the same level of flavor.
  • Don't over-muddle the ingredients. Muddling the ingredients is necessary to release their flavors, but it's important not to overdo it. Over-muddling can make the drink bitter and cloudy.
  • Use a large ice cube. A large ice cube will melt more slowly than smaller cubes, which will help to keep your Old Fashioned cold and diluted.
  • Garnish with a twist of citrus. A twist of citrus is a classic garnish for an Old Fashioned. It adds a bit of extra flavor and aroma to the drink.

Conclusion:

The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail that is easy to make and can be enjoyed by everyone. With its simple ingredients and delicious flavor, it's no wonder that the Old Fashioned has been a favorite for centuries. Whether you're a fan of bourbon, rye, or Japanese whiskey, there's an Old Fashioned recipe out there for you. So next time you're looking for a refreshing and flavorful cocktail, give the Old Fashioned a try. You won't be disappointed.
