WHISKEY COUGH CURE

Whiskey Cough Cure image

Here it is... I promised I'd post it. My grandmother's sure-fire mix to fix that tickley cough in the back of your throat or that deep wheezy cough that rattles and hurts. Don't worry about the gettin drunk part; you won't be using that much because this is good. Keep in mind these measurements are VERY approximate. HOWEVER, do keep the ratio's kinda the same.

Time 5m

Yield 1/4 cup

Number Of Ingredients 4

1/4 cup good strong cheap whiskey
3 peppermint candies (the hard kind)
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons sugar (this is actually to taste)

Steps:

  • In a small fruit jar, place the whiskey and honey.
  • Crush the peppermints well (this just helps them dissolve) and toss in the jar. If you need it, add the sugar, but if you don't need it, don't add it.
  • Let sit and the peppermints dissolve.
  • When you need it, take a spoonful; tablespoon if it's very bad, teaspoon if it's light. It's alright to give this to children, just make it more diluted with water.

IRISH WHISKEY & HONEY REMEDY

Irish Whiskey & Honey Remedy image

Cold and Flu season are here. As a child, I used to get sick quite a bit and always seemed to get a nasty cough. My grandmother used to prepare this drink for me, it really helped and tasted so good (since I was a child, she didn't add a full shot of whiskey, but she did add some). The drink worked and by the next day, my cough was better. As an adult, I still prepare this drink when I get a cold. It may not cure you completely, but it will make you feel better and soothe your soul too :)

HOREHOUND CANDY A COUGH CURE THAT WORKS! OLD SCHOOL!

Horehound Candy a Cough Cure That Works! Old School! image

This is a similar recipe to the one my grandpa used to make and give us kids when we were sick with a cold/cough. We loved it. We loved anything he gave us! :) The recipe belongs was shared by Jim Collums on Kathie's Herb Page. Molasses works well with horehound. He says this is incredibly great! So I am going to make some! I love molasses and it really worked for us kids!

Time 20m

Yield 20 pieces, 20 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 teaspoons horehound leaves
2 cups sugar
3 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup molasses

Steps:

  • Black strap molasses is recommended.
  • Let 1 cup horehound tea steep for about 3 minutes, or to taste. ( Made into tea with 1 cup boiling water). Do this with a regular coffee pot.
  • In a saucepan with the sides buttered, add 1 cup horehound tea, 2 cups of sugar and 3 tablespoons butter + molasses.
  • Bring to a boil with medium heat and continue to boil until temperature on a candy thermometer reaches 260-270 degrees. (This is really important because if it goes higher than this, the rolling and twisting becomes unmanageable. Gets hard to fast.).
  • Pour into a buttered pan and let set until cool enough to handle.
  • Pull candy with buttered hands, twisting into ropes 4-5 inches long. Snip into pieces with kitchen shears.
  • When cut, place all the pieces in a plastic container with sugar and shake for coating.
  • NOTES: to prevent unnecessary crystalization, never stir the pot or scrape the pan.

HOMEMADE COUGH MEDICINE

Homemade Cough Medicine image

This is a home remedy for that horrible cough that you just can't get rid of, and best of all: you probably already have all of the ingredients!

Provided by Daphne2002

Categories     Low Protein

Time 5m

Yield 4-8 doses

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons water

Steps:

  • Mix ingredients.
  • Take by the teaspoon as often as needed for cough.
  • Do not give to infants under 12 months due to the honey (though I doubt you could get them to take it anyway!).

Tips for Using Whiskey for Cough Cure:

  • Use High-Quality Whiskey: Opt for a smooth and flavorful whiskey, as the taste will directly impact the effectiveness of the remedy.
  • Moderate Consumption: Whiskey should be consumed in moderation, as excessive alcohol consumption can worsen cough symptoms.
  • Warm the Whiskey: Heating the whiskey helps release its vapors, which can effectively soothe irritated throat tissues.
  • Add Honey for Enhanced Relief: Honey possesses natural antibacterial and soothing properties, making it an ideal addition to whiskey cough syrups.
  • Lemon Juice for Vitamin C Boost: Lemon juice provides a rich source of vitamin C, which can help boost the immune system and aid in recovery.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Always use fresh ingredients, such as lemons and honey, to ensure maximum potency and flavor.
  • Consult a Doctor for Persistent Cough: If your cough persists or worsens, consult a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Conclusion:

Whiskey has been traditionally used as a cough suppressant due to its warming and soothing properties. While there is limited scientific evidence to support its effectiveness, anecdotal evidence suggests that it can provide relief from mild coughs. However, it's essential to use whiskey responsibly and in moderation. If your cough persists or worsens, consult a doctor to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Additionally, individuals with certain medical conditions or allergies should exercise caution when using whiskey as a cough remedy.
