CINNAMON FRENCH TOAST

Cinnamon French Toast image

A simple go-to recipe for French toast, perfect for almost any type of bread. Extra cinnamon gives it a potent sweet spice and half-and-half makes the custard rich without being too heavy.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 35m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup half-and-half
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, plus more for serving
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
6 large eggs
2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
8 slices challah or brioche bread (3/4 inch thick) or 12 slices sandwich bread
Confectioners' sugar, for dusting
Fresh fruit, for serving
Maple syrup, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F.
  • Whisk together the half-and-half, granulated sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, salt and eggs in a large bowl until very well combined and no visible egg white remains. Pour the mixture into an 8- or 9-inch square baking dish.
  • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add 1/2 tablespoon butter and when it melts, swirl to coat the skillet.
  • Put 2 slices of bread at a time in the custard until moistened through, about 10 seconds on each side for the thicker bread and 5 seconds for the thinner sandwich bread.
  • When the butter begins to sizzle, transfer the soaked slices to the skillet and cook until the custard is heated through and the slices are very golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer to a baking sheet and hold in the oven while you repeat with the remaining butter, bread and custard.
  • To serve, fan out the slices on a platter or individual plates and dust with confectioners' sugar and additional cinnamon. Serve with fresh fruit and maple syrup.

2 eggs
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
6 -8 slices bread

Steps:

  • Beat eggs with wire whisk until foamy.
  • Add milk, cinnamon and vanilla; Beat well.
  • Spray large non-stick skillet with cooking spray. Heat over medium heat. You can also use a griddle set at 375.
  • Dip bread into batter and cook until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. Whisk the batter before you dip each slice to distribute the cinnamon.
  • These can be made low fat by replacing the eggs with 4 whites or 1/2 cup egg substitute and using fat free milk. I usually double the recipe and refrigerate (up to a week) or freeze (2 months) the leftovers.

Provided by Food Network

Time 15m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 eggs (slightly beaten)
2/3 cup fat-free milk or evaporated fat-free milk
2 tablespoons sugar, divided
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon, divided
8 slices (1-inch thick) French or Italian bread (about 3- to 4-inches in diameter)
1 cup RICE KRISPIES® cereal
2 medium bananas, sliced or 2 cups sliced fresh strawberries
1/2 cup maple syrup, warmed

Steps:

  • In shallow dish stir together eggs, milk, 1 tablespoon of the sugar, vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon of the cinnamon. Dip bread slices into egg mixture, turning to generously coat both sides. Place on 15 x 10 x 1-inch baking pan coated with cooking spray.
  • Bake at 450 degrees F about 11 minutes or until light brown.
  • Meanwhile, in small bowl stir together remaining 1 tablespoon sugar and remaining 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon.
  • Turn bread slices. Sprinkle with KELLOGG'S® RICE KRISPIES® cereal. Lightly press cereal into bread. Sprinkle sugar-cinnamon mixture over cereal. Bake at 450 degrees F about 5 minutes more or until light brown.
  • Top each slice with some banana slices. Serve with syrup.

Tips:

  • Use stale bread: Stale bread absorbs the egg mixture better and results in a crispier French toast.
  • Use a variety of bread: You can use any type of bread for French toast, but some breads work better than others. Challah, brioche, and Texas toast are all good options.
  • Make sure the bread is evenly coated in the egg mixture: This will help to ensure that the French toast is cooked evenly.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: If you overcrowd the pan, the French toast will not cook evenly.
  • Cook the French toast over medium heat: This will help to prevent the French toast from burning.
  • Flip the French toast halfway through cooking: This will help to ensure that the French toast is cooked evenly.
  • Serve the French toast immediately: French toast is best served immediately after it is cooked.
  • Top the French toast with your favorite toppings: You can top the French toast with butter, syrup, fruit, whipped cream, or powdered sugar.

Conclusion:

Weekday Cinnamon French Toast is an easy and delicious breakfast or brunch recipe that can be made with just a few simple ingredients. It is a great way to use up stale bread, and it can be easily customized to your liking. Whether you like your French toast simple or topped with your favorite toppings, this recipe is sure to please.
