WASH DAY COBBLER

Wash Day Cobbler image

I found this recipe in an old cookbook that I checked out at a library. It tastes wonderful. I've never tried it with store bought pie filling (4 Cups). Like all cobblers, it's good with ice cream or home-made whipped cream.

This yummy cobbler recipe has been in my family (and probably most southern families) for ages. I have added and taken away a few things over the years, but I love it any way I make it.

Time 1h20m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 9

½ cup butter
1 (16 ounce) can sliced peaches in heavy syrup
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 cup self-rising flour
1 cup white sugar
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste
⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg, or to taste
1 cup 2% milk
2 tablespoons white sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat an oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Put the butter in an 8x8 inch baking dish and place in the oven to melt while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
  • Bring the peaches with syrup and 2 tablespoons of sugar to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer 10 minutes; set aside. Whisk together the flour, 1 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Stir in the milk until the mixture is just moistened. Pour into the hot baking dish over the butter. Spoon the peach slices and most of the syrup over the batter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar. Return to the oven and bake until the top is golden brown, 30 to 45 minutes longer.

Tips:

  • Choose the right fruit: Select ripe, in-season fruit for the best flavor. Fresh or frozen fruit can be used, but avoid canned fruit as it is often too soft and mushy.
  • Use a variety of fruits: Don't be afraid to mix and match different fruits to create your own unique cobbler. Some popular combinations include peaches and blueberries, apples and cranberries, and cherries and raspberries.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter will make the cobbler tough. Stir just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the cobbler until the crust is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling: This usually takes about 30-40 minutes. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, cover it with foil.
  • Let the cobbler cool slightly before serving: This will allow the filling to set and the crust to crisp up.

Conclusion:

No matter what kind of fruit you choose or what kind of crust you make, wash day cobbler is a delicious and easy dessert that is sure to please everyone at your table. So next time you have a hankering for something sweet, give this classic recipe a try.
