APPLE CRISP WITH OAT TOPPING

Apple Crisp with Oat Topping image

This is the best dessert for the early fall when the sweet and firm apples are just in season. Use the best quality cinnamon you can get and get it from a spice merchant or even a store where you can get it bulk; it does make a difference. Within ten minutes of going in the oven the scent will fill the house and neighbors you loaned things to years ago will return them just to invite themselves in and wonder aloud if there is any left (Note: there isn't). Optional accompaniments would be caramel sauce, ice cream, and whipped cream.

WARM APPLE CRISP

Warm Apple Crisp image

With Fall right around the corner,I thought I would share with you my favorite recipe for apple crisp. I know that their are several posted but this is just to good not to list. It mixes together very easily, keeps well, and the top stays crisp. It also can be doubled,by baking in a 9 by 13 pan. Its a favorite among our family and friends, and I have had several requests for this recipe. It is so delicious served with icecream, or just on its own. The crunchy topping adds to the sweetness and compliments the apples. Its a wonderful Fall dessert.

Time 1h

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

4 cups sliced peeled apples (I use yellow delicious mixed with jonathons)
1/4 cup orange juice
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine

Steps:

  • Mound apples in a buttered 9" pie plate, and sprinkle with the orange juice.
  • In a large bowl, combine sugar, flour, spices, and oatmeal.
  • Cut in butter until well mixed and crumbly.
  • Completely cover the apples with this mixture.
  • Bake at 375 for 45 minutes, or until apples are tender, and top is crisp.
  • Cool slightly.
  • Serve Warm with or without Icecream.
  • This can be re-warmed if made ahead of time.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples. This will give your crisp a more complex flavor and texture. Some good options include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.
  • Peel the apples if desired. This is not necessary, but it will give your crisp a more refined look.
  • Add a little bit of lemon juice to the apples. This will help to prevent them from browning and will also add a bit of brightness to the flavor.
  • Use a combination of white and brown sugar. This will give your crisp a more caramelized flavor.
  • Don't overmix the topping. You want it to be crumbly, not doughy.
  • Bake the crisp until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling. This usually takes about 30-40 minutes.
  • Let the crisp cool for a few minutes before serving. This will help it to set and will also make it easier to scoop.

Conclusion:

Apple raisin crisp is a classic fall dessert that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With its sweet and tart apples, chewy raisins, and crunchy topping, it is the perfect way to end a meal. So next time you are looking for a delicious and comforting dessert, give this apple raisin crisp a try.
