WALNUT CREAM BRAID

Walnut Cream Braid image

This pretty plaited bread comes all the way from North Pole - Alaska, that is! Resident Jean Erickson makes it each December for family and friends. 'It's become a tasty tradition we all look forward to,' she smiles. 'The nutty cheese filling is so good!'

Provided by Allrecipes Member

Time 45m

Yield 32

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
¼ cup warm water (105 degrees to 115 degrees)
½ cup butter or margarine, softened
2 tablespoons sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 egg
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 (3 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
¾ cup sugar
½ cup finely chopped walnuts
½ cup confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add butter, sugar, salt, egg and 1-1/2 cups flour; beat on low for 3 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Meanwhile, in a small mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar; set aside. Punch dough down; divide in half. On a floured surface, roll each portion into a 12-in. x 8-in. rectangle and place on greased baking sheets. Spread half of the filling down the center third of each rectangle. Sprinkle with walnuts. On each long side, cut 1-in.-wide strips about 2-1/2 in. into center. Starting at one end, fold alternating strips at an angle across filling. Seal ends. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes. Bake at 375 degrees F for 15-20 minutes or until browned. Cool on wire racks. Dust with confectioners' sugar if desired.

Tips:

  • For the best results, use cold butter and let it come to room temperature for about 15 minutes before using. This will make it easier to work with and will help to keep the dough from becoming too sticky.
  • If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time, until it is no longer sticky.
  • Be sure to refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out. This will help to keep the dough from sticking to the rolling pin and will make it easier to work with.
  • When rolling out the dough, use a light touch and try not to overwork it. The dough should be about 1/8-inch thick.
  • If the filling is too thick, add a little milk or cream until it is spreadable.
  • Be sure to brush the braid with an egg wash before baking. This will help to give the braid a golden brown crust.
  • Let the braid cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Conclusion:

The walnut cream braid is a delicious and easy-to-make pastry that is perfect for any occasion. With its flaky crust, creamy filling, and crunchy walnuts, this braid is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it. So next time you're looking for a special treat, give this walnut cream braid a try. You won't be disappointed!
