THE ORIGINAL WALDORF SALAD

The Original Waldorf Salad image

"Millions who never visited the Waldorf owe him a debt," The New York Times wrote in 1950, upon Oscar Tschirky's death. Mr. Tschirky, a Swiss immigrant who became known as "Oscar of the Waldorf," is credited with creating this piece of Americana in 1893, a timeless dish whose popularity has spread far past the Waldorf's exclusive doors and into home kitchens. Over time, variations would include blue cheese, raisins and chopped walnuts, which can be added here alongside the celery and apples. But the original is an exercise in simplicity: four ingredients that have lived on for over a century.

WALDORF SALAD (MIRACLE WHIP & COOL WHIP)

Waldorf Salad (Miracle Whip & Cool Whip) image

I am shocked that this recipe wasn't in the other 89 recipes for Waldorf Salad. I truly though up until right now that my family's recipe was the ONLY Waldorf salad that existed, lol. We always make this at Thanksgiving & Christmas. This isn't really a measuring recipe, so I'll guesstimate on the measurements this will make me enter. We start the dressing part by throwing in a wooden spoon full of Miracle Whip and a heaping wooden spoonful of Cool Whip, then add a bit here and there to taste. We usually use about half green apples and half red; we use whatever grapes we can find during the holidays. Cook time is chill time.
