WAFFLE-GRILLED HAM AND CHEESE

Waffle-Grilled Ham and Cheese image

Make a few extra waffles on the weekends, and turn the leftovers into this kid-favorite sandwich. (Okay, so maybe it's an adult-favorite, too!)

Provided by Jennifer Perillo

Time 10m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 cooked waffles
2 slices Swiss cheese, halved
Dijon mustard, optional
2 slices ham
Butter or nonstick spray, for greasing

Steps:

  • Lay 2 of the waffles on a counter or cutting board. Place a half-slice of cheese on top of each waffle. Spread some mustard over the cheese if using. Fold each ham slice in half, and place on top of the cheese slices. Layer another half-slice of cheese over each piece of ham. Top with the remaining waffles to form a sandwich.
  • Heat a nonstick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat.
  • Grease the skillet with some butter. Place the sandwiches in the pan, and cook until golden on the underside and the cheese starts to melt, 2 to 3 minutes. Flip the sandwiches, and cook until golden on other side and the cheese fully melts, about 2 more minutes. Serve hot or wrap in foil to pack for a school lunch or picnic.
  • Make it Your Own: For an Italian spin on this sandwich, swap in prosciutto for the ham and mozzarella for the Swiss.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients. The better the ingredients, the better the melt will be. Look for good-quality ham, cheese, and maple syrup.
  • Don't overcook the waffle. The waffle should be cooked through but still slightly soft in the center. If you overcook it, it will be dry and tough.
  • Use a good quality waffle maker. A good waffle maker will help you create evenly cooked waffles with a crispy exterior and a fluffy interior.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment. There are many different ways to make a ham and cheese melt. Try adding different ingredients, such as bacon, eggs, or vegetables. You can also use different types of cheese, such as cheddar, mozzarella, or Swiss.

Conclusion:

The waffled ham and cheese melt with maple butter is a delicious and easy-to-make meal that is perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is also a great way to use up leftover ham and cheese. Give this recipe a try the next time you are looking for a quick and satisfying meal.
