Time 30m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb ground beef, browned
2 onions, large chopped
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 (16 ounce) bag elbow macaroni
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 teaspoon garlic salt (I use Lawry's)
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon chili powder

Steps:

  • Saute beef, 1/2 tsp of red pepper flakes and 2 onions in large frying pan. Drain excess fat. Lots of onions makes this good.
  • Meanwhile, in another pan cook macaroni in boiling, salted water until tender. Set aside until almost ready to serve.
  • When beef and onions are finished cooking, add the canned, crushed tomatores and approximately 1/2 cup water; also add garlic salt, pepper, chili powder and mix well.
  • Simmer for about 20 minutes; then add cooked macaroni noodles and mix well when ready to serve. If you add the macaroni noodles too soon, they may over cook and get mushy.

1 lb ground beef
2 large onions
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (to taste)
16 ounces elbow macaroni
16 ounces crushed tomatoes (large can)
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon chili powder

Steps:

  • Saute beef, 1/2 tsp of red pepper flakes and 2 onions in large frying pan. Drain excess fat. Lots of onions makes this good.
  • Meanwhile, in another pan cook macaroni in boiling, salted water until tender (approximately 5 minutes for the smaller sized macaroni). Set aside until almost ready to serve.
  • When beef and onions are finished cooking, add the canned crushed tomatoes and approximately 1/2 cup water. Add garlic salt, pepper, chili powder and mix well.

  • This is one of my husbands favorite recipes from his mother when he was growing up -- it''s still a favorite today.

Tips:

  • Use lean ground beef to prevent the goulash from becoming too greasy.
  • Brown the ground beef in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat until it is no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease.
  • Add the onions, green peppers, and garlic to the pot and cook until the onions are softened.
  • Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, beef broth, paprika, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for at least 1 hour.
  • While the goulash is simmering, cook the egg noodles according to the package directions. Drain the noodles and set aside.
  • When the goulash is done simmering, stir in the cooked egg noodles and serve immediately.

Conclusion:

Vintage hamburger goulash is a hearty and flavorful dish that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. For a spicier goulash, add more chili powder or cayenne pepper. For a milder goulash, omit the chili powder and cayenne pepper. You can also add other vegetables to the goulash, such as diced carrots, celery, or potatoes. Serve vintage hamburger goulash with a side of bread or rice.
