MOM'S BASIC VEGETABLE BEEF STEW

Mom's Basic Vegetable Beef Stew image

This basic recipe uses simple and often used ingredients. It can be spiced up any way, but our spices we have found bring out the best flavor and they are the key to this recipe. Ground pork or ground lamb can be substituted for ground beef. It can also be cooked on the stovetop, which we do, or slow cooker. Eat as a stew or serve over rice, crushed chips or crackers, or cornbread.

Tips:

  • Mise en Place: Before you start cooking, ensure all your ingredients are prepped and measured. It will make the cooking process smoother and more enjoyable.
  • Use Fresh, Seasonal Vegetables: Fresh, seasonal vegetables are not only more flavorful, but they are also more nutritious. Try to incorporate a variety of colors and textures into your stew for a more appealing dish.
  • Don't Overcrowd the Pot: When adding vegetables to the pot, avoid overcrowding. Vegetables need space to cook evenly and develop their flavors. If there are too many vegetables in the pot, they will steam instead of sautéing, resulting in a mushy texture.
  • Use a Good Quality Broth: The broth is the base of your stew, so it's important to use a good quality one. If you have time, make your own broth using vegetable scraps and herbs. If using store-bought broth, choose a low-sodium option and season to taste.
  • Simmer, Don't Boil: Bring the stew to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer gently. Simmering allows the flavors to develop and meld together without overcooking the vegetables.
  • Season to Taste: Taste your stew periodically and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add more salt, pepper, herbs, or spices until the flavors are balanced.
  • Garnish and Serve: Before serving, garnish your stew with fresh herbs, a dollop of yogurt or sour cream, or a sprinkle of cheese. Serve with a side of crusty bread or rice for a complete meal.

Conclusion:

Creating a delicious and hearty vegetarian stew is easy with the right combination of vegetables, broth, and seasonings. By following these tips, you can make a flavorful and satisfying stew that's perfect for a cozy meal. So gather your ingredients, put on your apron, and get ready to enjoy a delicious and nutritious vegetarian stew!
