VANILLA SUGAR (VANILLEZUCKER)

Vanilla Sugar (Vanillezucker) image

While you can make a very nice vanilla sugar by simply plunging a vanilla bean into a jar of sugar and leaving it there (for a really, really long time), I actually like to make a slightly fancier version by processing vanilla and sugar together until the bean is all broken down and the sugar is speckled with countless tiny beans and specks of pod. The sugar is more intensely flavored than regular vanilla sugar. Packaged in a pretty glass jar, it also makes for a great gift.

Yield Makes 2 cups/400g

Number Of Ingredients 2

2 cups/400g granulated sugar
1 vanilla bean

Steps:

  • Cut the vanilla bean in quarters and place in the bowl of a small food processor. Add the sugar. Process until the vanilla bean is finely ground and well distributed. The sugar will be powdery.
  • Transfer the sugar to an airtight container. It will keep indefinitely.

Tips:

  • When preparing vanilla sugar, use a food processor or spice grinder to achieve a fine, even consistency. Avoid using wooden containers to store homemade vanilla sugar, as they may impart an undesirable flavor. Glass jars with tight-fitting lids are the best option, as they help preserve the sugar's aroma and flavor.
  • For optimal flavor, let the vanilla sugar mixture steep for at least a week before using. You can store the vanilla sugar in a cool, dark place for up to a year, though it is best to consume it within six months for the best flavor.
  • When baking with vanilla sugar, substitute it for regular sugar in equal amounts. Vanilla sugar can be used in various baked goods, including cakes, cookies, muffins, and scones. It can also be added to frostings, icings, and whipped cream for an extra boost of vanilla flavor.
  • In addition to baking, vanilla sugar can be used to enhance the flavor of beverages like tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. It can also be sprinkled on fruit salads, yogurt, and oatmeal for a touch of sweetness and vanilla flavor.

Conclusion:

Homemade vanilla sugar is a versatile and flavorful ingredient that can be easily made with just a few simple ingredients. It adds a rich, sweet vanilla flavor to a wide range of baked goods, beverages, and other dishes. Whether you are looking to enhance the flavor of your favorite recipes or simply add a touch of homemade charm to your kitchen, vanilla sugar is a delicious and easy-to-make option that is sure to impress.
