Yield serves 12

Number Of Ingredients 3

6 large sweet white onions, such as Vidalia
12 strips bacon
2 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Peel and wash the onions. With the point of a small, sharp knife, cut a 1-inch core from the top of each onion. Wrap 2 slices of bacon around each onion, securing it with toothpicks, and put 1 teaspoon butter in each core. Place each onion on a square of aluminum foil and bring the edges loosely together at the top. Put the foil-wrapped onions in a large pan and bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until the onions are tender when pierced with the tip of a knife. Cool the onions for a few minutes, then unwrap and cut in quarters to serve.

  • My brother, Wilson, loves to cook. His baked onions can be served with anything but are especially good with Barbecued Pork Ribs (page 84) and Baked Ham with Brown Sugar Honey Glaze (page 88).
  • Note
  • Cook onions on the grill by sealing the packets more securely. Cover the grill and check for tenderness after 1 hour of cooking.

Tips:

  • Choose the right onions: Yellow onions are the most common type used for grilling, but you can also use red onions or sweet onions. Yellow onions have a strong flavor that holds up well to grilling, while red onions are slightly milder and have a bit of a bite. Sweet onions are the mildest of the three and have a naturally sweet flavor.
  • Slice the onions properly: The best way to slice onions for grilling is to cut them into 1/2-inch thick rings. This will allow them to cook evenly and prevent them from falling apart.
  • Marinate the onions: Marinating the onions in a mixture of olive oil, vinegar, herbs, and spices will help to add flavor and prevent them from drying out. You can marinate the onions for as little as 30 minutes or up to overnight.
  • Grill the onions over medium heat: Grilling the onions over medium heat will help them to cook evenly and prevent them from burning. Cook the onions for 10-15 minutes, or until they are tender and caramelized.
  • Serve the onions immediately: Grilled onions are best served immediately. You can serve them as a side dish, on top of burgers or hot dogs, or in salads.

Conclusion:

Grilled onions are a delicious and versatile side dish that can be enjoyed with a variety of meals. They are easy to make and can be grilled in just a few minutes. With the right tips and techniques, you can grill perfect onions every time.
