I am not too sure on the Navy part as I found this on another site and I have no Navy experience, but it is said that that this is served over toast at breakfast and it is also great on hot dogs.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 1/2 lbs ground beef
2 medium onions, chopped
cooking oil, if needed
salt and pepper
5 tablespoons flour, approximate
1 (16 ounce) can whole tomatoes, diced
5 1/2 ounces tomato juice
2 cups hot water, approximate
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, to taste
1/2 teaspoon sugar, to taste

Steps:

  • Crumble the ground beef into a skillet and brown with the onions.
  • If beef is very lean, add a tablespoon or two of cooking oil.
  • Salt and pepper to taste.
  • Add flour, one tablespoon at a time, stirring and cooking each spoonful, before adding the next.
  • The flour must be cooked to preclude a starchy taste through out.
  • Add enough flour to absorb most of the oil.
  • Stir in the tomatoes and the tomato juice, followed by the water.
  • Allow to simmer on low heat to thicken.
  • Adjust consistency as necessary.
  • Add nutmeg and sugar and adjust to taste.

Having been in the US Navy for almost 10 years, I missed this breakfast, and searched it out many years ago. Not sure where i found it but still enjoy this from time to time. Relive your old Navy days with this great meal.

1 1/2 lb lean ground beef
2 medium onions, chopped
5 Tbsp all-purpose flour
2 can(s) 8 oz cans diced tomatoes with juice, i used the flavored ones
1 can(s) 5.5 oz can tomato juice, v8 works well here
2 c hot water
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp granulated sugar
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • 1. In a large skillet, over medium heat, brown the ground beef and onions. DO NOT DRAIN. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • 2. Stir in flour 1 tablespoon at a time, until beef juices have been absorbed.
  • 3. Stir in tomatoes, tomato juice and water. Simmer on low heat to thicken.
  • 4. Stir in nutmeg and sugar, simmer until all the flavors are blended well.

1 lb ground chuck (80/20 Seems to work best)
1 medium onion, chopped
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can of hunts diced tomatoes
1 1/2 cups tomato juice
3 tablespoons Wondra Flour
1/4 teaspoon ground mace
4 slices white toast

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, brown beef, breaking it up into pea sized pieces as it cooks.
  • When beef is about half cooked, add chopped onions and continue cooking until onions are translucent and tender.
  • Add each of the 3 tablespoons of flour and stir to cook in completely.
  • Add the diced tomatoes, juice and mace, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Serve over white toast slices.
